    3. There is a free pdf reader with built in OCR capability called PDF-XChange viewer. Results obviously depend on the quality of the original but you may find it worth a try. Google should find it for you - I don't have the URL to hand. There are some long articles that would take an age to re-type . You need MS Word or LibreOffice/OpenOffice Writer. The basic process is to copy the webpage in its entirety to a new document. If you're clever, you can select just the part of the webpage containing the text of the article, and copy that. Start a new, empty document and Paste what you've copied from the webpage. With LibreOffice and OpenOffice Writer, this can be pasted in several ways, but the best choice is probably as HTML. Then, what you get looks more or less like what appears on the web. From there, it all depends on what you want to do with the document. If you want more details, contact me off-list. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg

    3. It depends what you want to achieve Dai. Adding notes is not quite the same as adding mark-up, or 'inline meta-data'. The latter can indicate the nature/context/alternatives for something, and provide a link from there to data elsewhere (e.g. a Web page or database) Tony Proctor ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dai & Angela Bevan" <daibevan@clara.co.uk> To: <nottsgen@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, October 31, 2013 12:32 PM Subject: Re: [NTT] Find my Past > > Tony, David, > The easiest way I have found to highlight the article and add notes is > to > save the pdf of the page, then use the 'Sticky Note' capability of > Acrobat > Reader to make notes. 3. Tony, David, The easiest way I have found to highlight the article and add notes is to save the pdf of the page, then use the 'Sticky Note' capability of Acrobat Reader to make notes. It also serves to highlight the point of interest on the page when you return to it at a later stage. Dai On 31/10/2013 10:31, Tony Proctor wrote: As far as I know David, that's the only way. 3. If you have any OCR software David then it should be able to process a jpeg/tiff image (i.e. without having to print it off again and process the hard-copy). If you have a pdf file then it may process that directly although it's usually quite easy to capture a section of a pdf as a jpeg image. I saved a copy of that newspaper image on the Express site, and put this into OneNote here. There were a lot of errors in the text recognition but it might still be easier to correct the errors than to re-type the whole lot. I can do the conversion for you and return the text if you want to send me an image of your choice. It's no problem. Copy-and-pasting text from a blog or HTML page is not a problem but converting a jpeg (or similar) image to text requires OCR. Microsoft OneNote has a built-in OCR feature which might be useful. Just paste the image into it and there's an option to generate text. I can find it if anyone's interested. Tony Proctor

    3. Well have been experimenting with online ocr sites and this site was one of the easiest to use and was perfect for converting a modern pdf invoice from my inbox to an editable.txt file , no trouble at all ......however it really struggled with old news- type from the news archives , kept getting a message saying image "image quality too poor ". http://free-online-ocr.com/ Eventually I managed to produce the following 16 lines of text after pasting part of a column into Paint . Then saving as a .jpg and then using Windows photo gallery to turn the contrast right up , so I ended up with with black type on a white background rather than the "muddy" background of old newspapers . It seems to struggle with longer columns of print though so is probably more trouble than its worth !  This is the unedited result from a piece about Narrow Marsh : Oonvicted on the pr~ ions evening of the manslauffhteJ of Annie Elizabeth Burton, in Narrow-marsh, on the l5th of September last, was brought up for sentence. ~ On being asked by the Clerk of Arraigns whether he had anything to say why jaugment should not be nassed upon him, be said, ~ 61 hope your lordship will be as lenient to me as you nD." My discovery that the Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch had a great-great-uncle who was charged with murder (and acquitted) at the age of 14 in 1893 has made the national papers today (Daily Mail, Daily Express and Radio Times included) but unfortunately they didn't credit me, only Findmypast. 3. For those who have a subscription to Find my Past, a new blog has been posted on their site in the sub-section "Famous Family Trees", by "experienced family historian" Roy Stockdill (their description, not mine, which nevertheless I agree with). This one concerns Benedict Cumberpatch and is a most interesting read. I wonder if it was one which didn't make the "Who do you 5think you are" series? Brian Binns

    3. It seems this work was never published. I managed to get in touch with the author who said that a copy was given to Nottingham and Gedling councils with a view to publishing. No publisher was found and the copies were lost, or at least are missing. There is one buried in a time capsule (can't wait that long) and the author has a partial copy, but nothing else. This is a real shame and a good reason to never trust anyone with your original work. One website (http://www.robinhood.info/robinhood/Forest_Survival.htm) found via another one (http://www.bestwood-country-park.co.uk/bcp/community/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=11 2 ) pointed to an email address for the author armor1@ntlworld.com but it's 2009 so may not work. I also found a reference he seems to have written for someone on which he gives a phone number which is Tel 0 1 15 9679926 but again I have no idea how old it might be. 3. Aileen, You sent two conflicting messages. a) I have Wolverhampton St.Peters marriages 1538 - 1837 Jane Swane married 23 aug 1731 to Osbiston James Lic. of Wellington in this parish b) I am trying to find parents and family of Jane Swain/Swane Birth 1719 in North Muskham, Nottinghamshire. Firstly, if she married in 1731, she would only be 12, if born in 1719. Secondly, I suspect you should be looking in Wolverhampton, which is in Staffordshire. Peter
