Hey Christine, glad you got a result. From the marriage Nivard found (I didn't have time to look) I presume it was her with the Millan family. Findmypast is the partner site of FamilySearch Christine. They are using the same census-page reference so there is no mistake related to it being from findmypast rather than Ancestry. The reference you found in FamilySearch must have either been the wrong Michael or Ann was living/working away from home. I can see four unmarried Ann Quinns of about the right age who was born in Ireland. There's something odd going on here Christine. I found the FamilySearch entry and followed it back to findmypast. The page reference is the same as the one I sent earlier [RG9/2660/28/50], and the address is the same (47 Addison St), but the people are different. Thanks Brian for your helpful explanation, I've often wondered where the saying came from, and also why my mum used it so often! Lin In a message dated 01/11/2013 14:53:07 GMT Standard Time, bnbinns@gmail.com writes: Narrow Marsh was the street running through the centre of one of the most notorious slums of Nottingham in the early part of the 20th century, giving its name to the surrounding area. Later it was named Red Lion Street after the eponymous pub on that thoroughfare. I can imagine a cross reference to an untidy house, but given the almost total lack of greenery in the Narrow Marsh area, the likening to an untidy garden is odd. Funnily enough I have never ever heard this expression, but then again my ancestors came from Radford, New Basford, and Hyson Green where this expression might never had been used. When the Narrow Marsh area was cleared in the 1930s the occupants were in the main rehoused on Council Estates- can't recall which ones - so perhaps this expression was used by recently rehoused folk. There is lots of information on the net about Narrow Marsh, including lots of photos for instance on www.picturethepast.org.uk Brian Binns -----Original Message----- From: nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Lcsearch3528@aol.com Sent: 01 November 2013 14:33 To: tony@proctor.net; djwilson22@yahoo.com; nottsgen-l@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NTT] Find my Past - Narrow Marsh When I was a girl if our house or garden looked slightly untidy, my mother used to say that 'It looks like Narrow Marsh'! FamilySearch has a Samuel DOUGHTY born 15 Jun 1786 baptised by John and Elizath in Sutton Bonington St Ann on 11 Jul 1786. NottsFHS index does not record this though it does have - same dates, same place - Alice DOUGHTY d. Thomas and Elizabeth - which FamilySearch also has. I would be very grateful if someone who was in the Notts Archives could take a look at Sutton Bonington St Ann register for that date and see whether Samuel appears there. With thanks in advance, Bill
I now understand why there was a bit of confusion over my recent question on editing text from the newpaper archives . Thanks to Judy who has tried both versions . She tells me that the version on British Newspaper Archives has a built in simultaneous OCR function window that you can copy and paste text from . The version I use on Find My Past doesn't have this , (unless I have missed a tab somewhere) . So when my subscription runs out with FMP perhaps I will swop , as I use the old newspaper part much more than the family history . ------------------------------ On Thu, Oct 31, 2013 9:36 PM GMT J K gen wrote: >I still don't understand why you don't use the British Newspaper Archives >own website. Narrow Marsh was the street running through the centre of one of the most notorious slums of Nottingham in the early part of the 20th century, giving its name to the surrounding area.
