Thank you. I appreciate your help. I don't know the area at all but this looks promising, especially since Richard named his son Edward. I know there were several Hollingworth families in Nottingham but wherever I find Richard's name it is spelled with the 's' added, Hollingsworth. They may be interchangeable, but then again, maybe not. There were Hollingsworth families in Nottingham also. Yes, I know about differences in spelling. I have another family name, Eddy, and I have found it spelled 21 different ways. Ann, Thank you for your very kind words. I wouldn't normally push myself, but seeing as you have already mentioned it, here goes. Yes, I am giving a talk at this month's NFHS meeting, next Wednesday the 20th, at their meeting room at the New Mechanics Hall on North Sherwood Street. Although my talk is about my grandfather, it does incorporate an insight into a social problem in the late 1920s,1930s, and 1940s in Nottingham, which was also nationwide. I found this from researching my grandfather's life through British Newspapers on line (Find my past site) and discovered something I hitherto knew nothing about. This should be of interest to all. My grandfather's life could also be described as "interesting and colourful!" Tonight I am also doing this talk in my adopted home of Loughborough. This will be the first time I have done this, or indeed any Family History talk, and whilst used to standing up in front of people thanks to amateur dramatics, I am still a bit nervous. I came back from a few days away and saw 16 messages from all the friendly NottsGen folks, giving all different sorts of advice. As a rule I would normally delete these straight away, but now I have found out that there doesn't seem to be any of you who are members of Notts FHS. What a pity; there is an excellent speaker this month by the name of Brian who will talk about his 'Entrepreneurial Ancestor', wish I could be there. I have been to 3 of their meetings when over in the UK including one talk on the dialects of Derbyshire and the East Midlands called 'Ey up mi duck' by John Titford. Yes, thank you, I do have this. This is where I found his place of birth. I have records of all of his military service which was searched for me in 1983 but evidently this was missed at the time. I live in Oregon and will have to find someone who can go through the church records for me. In Remembrance of my grandfather Thomas George YOELL and connected family members who gave their lives that we may be free Also all those family members, to numerous to mention here that served their Country ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children, England mourns for her dead across the sea. Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit, Fallen in the cause of the free. Solemn the drums thrill: Death august and royal Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres. There is music in the midst of desolation And a glory that shines upon our tears. They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted, They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight, To the innermost heart of their own land they are known As the stars are known to the Night; As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust, Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain, As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness, To the end, to the end, they remain. We have had 3 of this type recently One in French and two in English. It is very unsettling because the hacker has managed to include accurate details about the victim in short, in one case, we learned that the husband of the woman (French) had been killed in a car accident in London. After frantic phone calls, all over the place - because the couple were as I suspected - on holiday in the USA! - the son, who was minding his mother's mobile and emails telephoned us to say that their email system was completely blocked. A friend foolishly replied by email to a similar scam and immediately received a follow on "Now send money to X" message! NEVER reply to such a message by the (compromised ) email - it could leave you open to someone's "interest"! The answer is that the victim (the one whose mail has been taken over) needs to change 1. password 2. preferably the complete email address 3. the server too, especially if they have not been helpful to you! Also keep different passwords for different things - i.e do not use the same one for family history, the bank and online purchasing. If you send messages to several people at the same time or forward something, wipe out existing email addresses and send under BCC so the addresses are not all available for spammers to grab. Finally a friend - an IT specialist - says there is a current problem with gmail and googlemail - apparently they are relatively easy to break into. Good luck! This is a well known scam it's been on TV, some of Angela Rippons friends fell for it I believe. Even if I knew a friend was on holiday & I got this email from them I wouldn't respond as any of my friends would try to contact me directly & speak to me. Hello All, Is there anyone out there who is also in the Notts FHS who are getting what I will call '*begging emails*' supposedly from Dominic Johnson and Mary Ellis? They are asking for money as they are apparently stranded overseas with no money and could I send them some urgently through Western Union or whatever. I have had 2 separate emails for this - one for Dominic on 22 Oct and Mary on 2 Nov. and obviously I haven't replied. I would not normally use this site in this way but I have no-one else to ask and I can't use the NFHS website as I do not want to become involved in any virus scam. Thank you, Ann BASSFORD - née BIRKINSHAW, in very warm area of NZ :-)
Ann, If you don't know the sender just delete them. And even if you do know the sender, ring and ask if they sent a suspicious email. Peter
