In fact, there were also four children called OLDAKER with a mother whose maiden name was LEAVENTON with births registered at Birmingham between 1914 and 1920 (FreeBMD). Thus, John Oldaker must have married Amelia Leaventon and William Edward Morgan married Lily Pickering. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. From: "Margaret thompson" > can anyone tell me please if possible who William Edward Morgan > married on December 1901 in Birmingham.6d 280. thank you.Maggie.> I am not entirely clear why you are asking this on the Nottinghamshire list, since Birmingham is in Warwickshire. However, looking at the entry at FreeBMD, William Edward Morgan must have married either Amelia LEAVENTON or Lily PICKERING. The fourth name on the page is John OLDAKER. The marriage must have occurred a few months after the 1901 census. If you look at that census there is only one William Edward Morgan then resident in Birmingham and there is an Amelia Leaventon, both being born about 1879. I cannot see an obvious candidate for Lily Pickering but I see two John Oldakers in Birmingham, both born about 1872. On the balance of probabilities, given the ages, I would hazard a guess - but no more - that William Edward Morgan married Amelia Leaventon, since they would seem to be identical in age. However, there is only one way to be sure which is to purchase the birth certificate. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Hi   Is there a computer genuious out there? I know this is off topic, but I would appreciate help, but please email off list.   Two weeks ago I was downloading service pack three updates. The installation failed and I pressed the cancel button. On doing this, files started to delete, so I pressed the off button on my processor. When I turned my computer back on all I got was a blue screen with the message " Autocheck programme not found" I tried to re-install windows and that failed and I also tried the recovery disc, but to no avail. i could not do anything with my computer at all, all I kept getting was the same screen with the same message. My computer has been at PC world for two weeks and although they have managed to install windows, they tell my data has been lost. This is 10 years of work and stupidly I have nothing backed up....Obviously, I'm some what upset and feeling rather low, because my family tree is my life and without it I'm stuck....   I use Family tree maker version 6 and I do have a homepage...The dog has chewed my version 6 disc up when he was a puppy....so I haven't even got that. My question is has anyone any idea how I can recover my family tree? any suggestions would be most welcome...Is the tree still there as a GEDCOM File? Kind regards Pat Williams

    1. [NTT] Nottingham ancestry of actress Josephine Tewson
    2. Roy Stockdill
    3. I hope the Administrator will not construe this message as advertising (!) but I would like to bring to the notice of listers my article in the latest (November) issue of the magazine Practical Family History on the ancestry of the well-known actress Josephine Tewson - she's Elizabeth in Keeping Up Appearances, next-door neighbour of the monumentally snobbish Hyacinth Bucket who panics every time she has to go in for coffee because she's terrified of breaking one of Hyacinth's best cups. She's also in Last of the Summer Wine as the spinster librarian, Miss Davenport, and she starred in a major comedy series with Ronnie Barker, back in the 80s, called Clarence. She's been around as one of Britain's best comedy actresses for probably 50 years and more. The reason I am posting this is because Josephine descends in her mother's family tree from the Morley family of Sneinton, or Old Sneinton, Nottingham. I managed to get her line back to one Gregory Morley, born circa 1718, who married Mary Silcock at Nottingham St Mary in 1745. One branch of the Morleys became the founders of the famous hosiery firm, but Jo's great-grandfather was William Morley, baptised 1821 at St Mary's, Nottingham, d. 1912, who moved to Derby and worked his way up to become Chief Clerk of the Midland Railway. He was also an important figure in Derbyshire sport, serving on the Derbyshire County Cricket Club committee and being a founder of Derby County FC in 1884 (though perhaps this will not be a popular thing to say on a Nottinghamshire list!). Several listers were kind enough to help me earlier this year when I mentioned I was doing this research into the Morleys of Old Sneinton, though I couldn't at the time reveal the name of my subject. I want to thank them all and to say that if anyone feels my own expertise in researching in Yorkshire may be of help, then feel free to contact me. There is a chart back to all her 16 gt-gt-grandparents in Practical Family History, but below are Jo's Nottingham ancestors, in case anyone thinks they may be related. She is an absolutely lovely person, totally down-to- earth, and I am sure she would be interested to hear. Jo's paternal ancestry is fascinating because her father was a foundling in the famous Thomas Coram Foundling Hospital in London, but I managed to obtain access to his records which was quite moving for Jo as she'd never known his true identity before. Here are the Nottingham ancestors of Josephine Tewson..... 4x-gt-grandparents: Gregory MORLEY, bp 26 Apr 1718 at Sneinton, married Mary SILCOCK 10 Nov 1745 Nottingham St Mary. 3x-gt-grandparents: Gregory MORLEY, bp 7 Aug 1748, m Elizabeth TYRE 9 Jan 1777, Sneinton. 2x gt-grandparents: Thomas MORLEY, bp 12 May 1793, Sneinton, m Elizabeth FOX 7 May 1820, Sneinton. Thomas Morley was a publican at Sneinton and later became the Registrar of Births & Deaths for the parish. Gt-grandparents: WILLIAM MORLEY (details above) who married 18- year-old Ann SLATER in Derby on 17 June 1848. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html

    3. Clive, If the time frame is around 1818, then the 45th Regiment of Foot (Sherwood Foresters) were definitely stationed in Cork about that time, as that is also when/where one of my ancestors married a Irish girl before being discharged at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham. Given his age, and assuming he was in the 45th, Samuel may also have served in the Peninsular War. If so, and given he was still alive in the 1840s, he would have qualified for the General Service Medal. The National Archives may still have Samuel's 'WO97' records - see * http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/default.htm*<http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/default.htm> Rob Nottingham, UK -----Original Message----- From: nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com [*mailto:nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com*<nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com>] On Behalf Of Nivard Ovington Sent: 30 October 2008 16:33 To: Clive Hayhoe; Notts Mailing List Subject: Re: [NTT] Notts regiments in Ireland circa 1800 Hi Clive The only Samuel BOSTOCK I can find that fits your details is a Derbyshire born Samuel BOSTOCK b1776 who has a wife Alice born in Ireland (1851 census) They are in the Parish of St Mary Nottingham at Pomfret Street The one fly in the ointment is Alices age, she is enumerated as born 1804 (47) in 1851 Is this your couple? as I cannot find another Alice could be a second wife of course or she could be enumerated incorrectly I find the same couple (bar Alices age) in 1841 in the same street (although Samuel is enumerated as Y born in Notts) There she is numerated as 55 so a max of 59 down to 55 (ages rounded down to nearest five in 1841) >From the ages of the possible children they returned to England around >1812 to 1829 Have you asked at Dublin to see if they have information on any Regiments there around 1800? Have you found the baptism as that may give a mention of his Regt (if he had one of course) I would not be to hung up about him being in a Notts/Derby Regiment as various Regts recruited in the most unlikely of places around the Country Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) Hi All, Can anyone offer advice as to how I can research the possibility of Notts males being involved in military service in Ireland circa 1800? I note that the Union of Ireland legisation was passed by the British Parliment in 1800 (Irish Parliment abolished at that time) and I am wondering if there was any Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire military involvement during this period..?? My Notts ancestor Samuel Bostock (bn abt 1776) had a child born in Dublin in about 1803 to his wife Alice (born Ireland abt 1782) and thus I surmise that he may have married Alice in Ireland circa 1800-02 and feel that if so then he may have been in Ireland at that time due to a military connection..?? The dates reagrding Samuel and Alice come from the Nottm 1841-51 census. Regards, Clive Hayhoe.
