Hi, Ok, never thought of that. The chap I am looking for is Walter James Brown born in Stockton on Tees in 1884. His last known address was 122 Mills Lane Nottingham when he married Sarah Ann Oakland on 7th July 1906. Sarah Ann married again in January 1918, she was a widow with a young son, also Walter aged 11 and at that time she was living in Merchant Street, Nottingham. What happened to Walter snr has been a brick wall now for so long it would be a great Christmas if we could knock it down. Hi Barbara Are you still wanting to receive postcards from around the World? Have you filled your wall? We don't live in a very picturesque area but can have another look for postcards if you still want some. Regards Heather barbara wrote: > <snip> and I thought how nice it would be to have a wall with postcards showing me where you all live eg your village, town, city state, county whatever. Hi List, If a soldier was shot in WW1 as a coward or a deserter, are there any records or would he just be included in the war dead? Thanks Shirley
My apologies to the list: I just fired off a message re Ancestry UK and noticed too late that I hadn't changed the subject line. Mea culpa! Blanche Charles Wellington New Zealand
I agree with comments of dissatisfaction with the new Ancestry layout. I have always found it easier to access the 1841 - 1891 Census via TNA - takes you straight to the search page for whichever year you select: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/census/ (You have to scroll down the page for the list). For 1901 you have to select another census and use the breadcrumb menu to select "UK Census Collection" and then scroll down the page for the list. (The link from the above page for 1901 otherwise takes you to 1901censusonline.com: pay-to-view). To get back to the old search, there is a linked-message on the right, just below the log-in box: "Switch back to old search experience". If people use it often enough they might get the message!! UK BMD records are here: http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx UK migration: http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/default.aspx?rt=40 UK Military: http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/default.aspx?rt=39 (On the last two pages, make sure to check the box "Only show results from the UK & Ireland"). Good luck!! Hugh, I must disagree with you. As many of us use Ancestry, (and it is in fact owned by Rootsweb), I think that to discuss and exchange our ways of using what is a prime tool for lots of us is relevant. Oh how I agree with you. I have just been in a 3 day query with them over my account - I don't exist - or didn't until today. Why is it that every time we see "we have made it easier for you" it always turns out to take three times as long? All they seem to be interested in doing is seeing how much data they can amass (which is not a bad thing), but they seem to forget that a lot of people are only amateurs on the computer. David, You can get out of the "new" format and go back to the familiar, old, and in my opinion, better format. Trouble is that I've already done it weeks ago so can't tell you how to do it as I now only access Ancestry in the previous format. Check out the home page and I'm sure that there is something there that enables you to go back to the old format.
