    1. [NTT] An open letter to Hugh - our List Owner - Subject: Re: Charles Henry Gagg info request
    2. Jack Richards
    3. Dear Hugh I am writing an open letter to you, via this list, concerning a response by a woman signing herself "jennifer woolard <jgwoolard@hotmail.com>" to a reply by Roy Stockdill. I respectfully request that this woman be required forthwith to make a written apology on this list not only to Roy Stockdill but also to all of us who are members of Nottsgen. If she fails to do so forthwith, I respectfully suggest she be banned for the list until such times as she does apologise. She writes: "Talk about a self opionated wanka - get your head into the real world Roy and stop making everyone, who may not have the same where-with-all as you, feel like second class citizens or family historians". This is the most disgraceful, nay disgusting comment that I have ever seen either on this Nottsgen. List or any other list or forum for that matter. Many years ago, when I joined this list and other lists, it was made clear, the "house rules" and that one had to conduct oneself as if a guest in a house and behave accordingly. Clearly, this "jennifer woolard" woman is either unaware of such etiquette or chooses to ignore same. Her comments relating to Roy Stockdill are akin to libel. Quite simply, they are insulting. I want to make it clear that I have no connection with Roy Stockdill, other than I see postings on this list by him. I wonder if this "jennifer woolard <jgwoolard@hotmail.com>" would like to explain what she means by the word "wanka". I cannot find it in my dictionaries. In case any readers should think I am not "street wise", please allow me to comment that I spent almost 30 years of my career, on the streets of Greater Manchester at the sharp end of crime, hardened criminals and have met all sorts of people from beggars, murderers to Royalty. Yes, I do know all the swear words and more besides. I look forward to your response. Kindest regards Jack Richards www.richardsbygonetimes.co.uk

    3. Veronica, If memory serves me correct we had had about 5 comments on the new Ancestry set-up when the list administrator called a rather premature halt to it. On the Leics board it was discussed for about a week, with lots of constructive comments and it has now died a natural death. I'm sure that it is a very difficult job running a list, but I for one would not have found out how to "tweak" the new Ancestry layout except for the contributions made on other lists. 3. Given that family history is not just facts, dates and people, but what people did and said, can I throw open the subject of bowdlerised Christmas Carols. As a child growing up on a Nottingham council estate in the late 40's and early 50's I recall that we used to sing "our" versions of Christmas songs. The only 2 I can remember went roughly so:- We three Kings of Orient are, One in a Taxi, one in a car, One on a scooter, papping his hooter, Following yonder star. The scooter in question was not of course a Vespa or Lambretta, but a child's scooter that you scooted along with your foot. Now none of the ones I knew had horns, so how come we sang about hooters? Probably just because it rhymed. The other one was:- Whilst Shepherds washed their socks at night, All steaming in the pot, A lump of soot came tumbling down, And spoilt the blinkin' lot. Another illogical wording. As the Shepherds were seated outside, how could a lump of soot come down? Oh the innocence of youth. Anyone else remember singing these? Brian Binns

    1. Re: [NTT] Fw: Charles Henry Gagg info request
    2. Jack Richards
    3. I respectfully request that I be allowed to submit my response to some of the comments made by contributors to this list on this topic. In posting this reply, I have tried to be objective and hopefully have not used any "disgusting, nay disgraceful, objectional words". Hopefully, my wording will fit the lines. Alan M Gagg wrote: "I am looking for any info on Charles Henry Gagg born in sept. quarter1883, register district gainsborough, we know he married Charlotte Ann Wass in 1905 and one of their children was Walter Gagg born in 1918. Any info on whom his parents/ siblings were would be most appreciated" As I recall, nobody replied to this request with information. Roy Stockdill did respond. I suspect, like many of us, the first thing he noticed was that the requester had an "f2s.com" which translates to "freedom to search" and it is a "com" - hence like me, he would have good reason to believe it was a request from England, then the "com" and was not from someone outside of England and certainly not in the outback in Australia. Roy answered in a common sense, positive manner. "There is a very simple solution to this query. Why don't you buy the birth certificate, since you apparently know when and where he was born? This will give you the names of both his parents instantly, or is that too obvious? This will cost you £7.00, but sometimes family history does cost money, just like any other hobby!" Yes, it was a straightforward answer and the words "or is that too obvious?" could be said to be a bit sarcastic. Maybe, it was not necessary. On the other hand, perhaps the nature of the request deserved it! I do not know Roy Stockdill in person but know of him through this list. I believe him to be an honest, experienced researcher, who calls a spade a spade and who suffers fools lightly. Of course I am in no way suggesting that the requester was a fool, far from it. Most certainly, Roy Stockdill helps many people on this list and deserves respect. Roy Stockdill continues with sound advice and provides information as requested. "You could also look at the 1891 and 1901 censuses. He is very easily found in 1891 at Misterton, Lincolnshire, along with his mother, who was a widow, and three siblings." The requester has stated elsewhere he has much experience of researching the GAGG name, so it is reasonable to suppose he would know where to find Charles Henry GAGG, both in 1891 and 1901. Roy Stockdill provides more help and suggests, "If you can't afford the subscription, then Ancestry and Findmypast are available free at many public libraries". I'm sure the requester would know where local access to such finding aids were available. He has much experience of research into the name GAGG. Roy then provides more information. "I will give you a clue - the mother's name was Betsy and she was a washerwoman, aged 28. Then try looking at marriages at Gainsborough at FreeBMD and find a Betsy or Elizabeth who married a GAGG." Again, I'm sure the requester would know of FreeBMD, once he had this information. Further advice is forthcoming from Roy, "Buy the birth certificate before anything else! It will tell you what you want to know, i.e. who his parents were. You can buy it online from the GRO website, using the reference you obviously already have - Charles Henry GAGG, Sep qrtr 1883, Gainsbro, vol 7a page 720. Then take out a subscription to Ancestry or Findmypast and check out the censuses - or find a library that has them for free." He is offering accurate sound advice. If the requester cannot afford the £7 for a certificate, he suggests finding a "free access". There will be some people who cannot afford to spend money on the hobby and those people have to find ways to do their research. My strong suspicion is that the requester can afford the £7, if he chooses to do so! I believe Roy Stockdill has the right, and is correct to state: "I don't see the problem apart from the fact that you seem to be asking others to do your research for you. I am very sorry to seem unkind or unhelpful but, really, this sort of query annoys many of us because it seems to me you are simply trying to get people to help you for gratis and not doing anything to help yourself." I agree with Roy, this is how this request appears to me. In fact, I will go further and suggest that, in my experience, quite a few people adopt this trend. The fact that Roy Stockdill "advertises" himself at the end of his emails is harmless. How many people "embellish the truth" on cv's? We no longer have clerks, everybody is at least an administrator! 3. I have bought over 70 bmd's over the years and have helped many people without any thought of cost and time. I also have what is probably one of the largest personal family history websites on the net with over 100 pages of info that is available to anyone that is connected in anyway to the Gagg families. I used to have an ancestry subscription , but as I had completed my own research it became uneconomical to keep it up just for the odd query from other parts of the Gagg family. This query was from the young daughters of a part of the Gagg family I had not heard of from before and I have passed on what info I had which is extensive on the Misterton family. But not on their part of that family , which is why I asked for any help. Fortunately not everyone is an ungracious un generous person like you. (I am being polite here) like you, and I have had a response from Peter Gainsborough that helped enormously and has been passed on to the Gagg family in question. -----Original Message----- From: nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Roy Stockdill Sent: 18 December 2008 21:01 To: NOTTSGEN@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [NTT] Charles Henry Gagg info request From: "Alan M Gagg" <alanmgagg@f2s.com> > I am looking for any info on Charles Henry Gagg born in sept > quarter1883,register district gainsborough, we know he married > Charlotte Ann Wass in 1905 and one of their children was Walter Gagg > born in 1918. > > Any info on whom his parents/ siblings were would be most appreciated. > There is a very simple solution to this query. 3. I think the point here is that at moment of birth there is no argument as to who the mother is - she is certainly present! But the father? Yes, well . . . Her husband? The milkman? The lodger? The arguments start when the birth is recorded, and as Brian says, the facts can then be "bent" in accordance with the moral standards of the day and the society. So the path of genealogy back through the years can be littered with all kind of scandals. Is there a family which hasn't got a skeleton or two somewhere in their genealogical cupboard? 3. Just catching up on some old messages so apologies for resurrecting an old thread! I have to disagree with the statement "Genealogists always have to bear in mind that there is no argument as to who the mother of the baby is". There are no certainties in genealogy - only probabilities! You can never be sure who the mother is because in some cases a mother would claim her daughter's illegitimate child as her own to protect the family honour and protect the daughter's marriageability (is there such a word?!?). In my own family there is a similar example. Some are still alive so there are no names! GC had a sister KC. Shortly after GC married, her sister KC became pregnant with an illegitimate child. This was in 1950's Dublin. To prevent her sister becoming a "Magdalene Girl" both GC and KC kept out of public view until after the birth. The child was registered as the son of GC with her husband as the father. He was raised as their own son.
