On one of the "Who do you think you are?" programmes they searched at some sort of museum/information centre about them, I think it may have been in Ilkeston. Does anyone know if I am right and if so how to contact them? Thanks Shirley

It is still on my 1960's map of Nottingham, but has been demolished I would guess - I don't go into that area at all now. I have googled at length but can find nothing at all. I have also checked my old maps and the old streets list but to no avail. The address is Auckland Street Nottingham and the ED number is 27. 3. Carol Depending on the brand of laptop, you will most likely have a function that make some of the alpha keys into numeric. On a Compac/HP laptop you would for instance press the "fn" key and "f8" keys. The pseudo keypad comes into play, and holding down the "alt" key and entering the 0163 sequence will produce the £ sign. Don't forget to clear the original function keys when finished. 3. Can you get, on the top line, INSERT ? If so, you go Insert, Symbol and then scroll up/down to get the pound sign. I have a similar problem. Although I have it marked on the keypad, I cannot get the Euro sign (nor the pound for that matter, though the $ is there! And I am English living in the Euro zone. I use either Alt + ...., or Insert Symbol! 3. Denise, I made this comment too. Having a large Welsh component in my tree, searching for Mary THOMAS and John JONES without seeing a place of birth is going to be impossible, and searching for every possible place of birth they could have used will be time-consuming, and that's before you even think about transcription errors in Welsh place names! However, I don't think they will change, in many cases if you verify the year and place of birth, there is no need to go any further, so you will not need to buy a transcription or image, and hence they will get no money. regards, Dai <snip> Denise Wynn wrote: > transcript, in the least, the place of birth. > As someone who was involved with the beta test of the site over Christmas, I > know this issue was raised by a large number of people. 1. Re: [NTT] Institutions
    2. Dai & Angela Bevan
    3. Roy, Sorry, but you are incorrect too. If you scroll back to the first page, you will not find the institution either. I happened to be at TNA last Tuesday when it went live, so took the opportunity to look then. One of my tree was in an institution, and I though as you did that scrolling back to the first page would give me the name of the institution, but it didn't. The only way I could find the institution ewas to look at the transcription page. When I queried this, it appears the institution name is on the page before the first name, and this is one of those ' additional pages' that we will be able to see 'soon'. The only way at the moment to find the institution is too look at the transcription. I believe therefore, that if you are paying to see the information, for an intitution the transcription is more use than the image. Finally, another lister suggested Nottingham Workhouse, but you have to be careful. There are 3 Joseph OAKLANDs listed in Notts., Two shown as Basford and one as Nottingham, yet if you search for Thomas OAKLAND resident in Basford, all three are pulled up, and if you put in Basford Workhouse, you pull up just the one.. There were several workhouses in Basford district though, so you stil lcannot be sure that it was Basford Workhouse itself. regards, Dai Dai Roy Stockdill wrote: From: "Doreen" [1]<reen2@optusnet.com.au> Hi Roy They have released the 1911 census a year early as you know. One of the conditions of release was that the institution information is not revealed until 1912. It should tell you on the 1911 site somewhere because I have read it online but cannot recall which site. Hope this helps Regards Doreen > Dear nottsgen. Ihave visited the 1911 census and I have found out my Grandfather was in an institution but it does not tell me what sort of institution it was or where. The original page has all male names. how could I get more information on this. His name was Joseph Oakland. Was it a prison or Workhouse. can anyone help.Roy Langham. > Actually I don't think that is correct. The only information blanked out is the very last column of the schedule which reveals whether someone was handicapped in some way. I think you probably could find out what the institution was but it would mean loooking at every page until you get to the first one and this, of course, could cost you many units. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: [2]www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
