I use FTM myself and put in 'Abt March, June, September or December', I know this means that the event was registered during the quarter ending on that month. If I have any further information I include it in the notes for that individual. Obviously if I then obtain a certificate or find the exact date from another source, I replace the approximate date with the exact one. All this makes excellent sense, although not so sure about the ones you use for the GRO entry. It is possible for a birth to take place some considerable time before the quarter of registration. Indeed even a death can have occurred some time before its registration, if there was a delay caused by a post mortem, or criminal charge for example. Perhaps one could use Bet Jan-Mar 1850, but insert "reg" (for registered) before the place data. One of your suggestions (using the proper date of the census) is very good indeed, may I copy that? I only ever say "bef 1841" or "aft 1841" for example, yours is more precise. Hi Brian I use: Bet Jan-Mar 1898 (BMD) when I have found the GRO entry but haven't ordered the certificate Bet 01 Jan - 15 Mar 1898 (B) when I have the GRO entry and a baptism date (I also have another entry for the baptism itself) Bef 15 Mar 1898 (B) when I have a baptism date only when I cannot know for certain how old they were at their baptism Aft 2 Apr 1871 (D) when I lose the person after a census Abt July 1905 (D) when I have a burial date but no actual death date (like baptism, I have another entry for the burial details) Bef 6 June 1841 (D) when I cannot find them on any census and have to asssume that they died before the 1841 census I'm sure that there must be other prefixes you can use. Thank you to those of you who replied concerning John GODFREY. If anyone has the Parish Records for Greasley could they please do a look up to see if there is an Ann Wright born about 1847/48 and if so are there any parents mentioned? With thanks Margaret

RootsMagic lets you put in anything, I use R Dec 1888 for example to indicate registration in the Dec 1/4 1888. Hi Brian I have FTM, what I do is put the date Abt.1880 obviously because the field wont allow you to put anything else into it. Then in the where/place box I type the place, month 1/4 and GRO ref number. I have found this to be most helpful, especially when ordering certificates. Hi, Actually both marriages were on 5th Ocober 1875 at Blidworth. There are numerous male GODFREY marriages at Blidworth during the 19th century ( I have found 32 on a quick scan of the Notts FHS marriage CD). Also I work with a lad with the surname GODFREY who comes from Blidworth. It's a very common name in Blidworth/Rainworth area. regards Pete in Mansfield ----- Original Message ----- From: "Graham Taylor" <gtmt11@ntlworld.com> To: <NOTTSGEN@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, January 20, 2009 7:07 PM Subject: [NTT] John Godfrey > The 1881 census has John GODFREY Age 28 with wife Ann age 31 living in > Kirby > in Ashfield. > > > > There is a wedding in December 1875 where John appears to have married Ann > Wright but also in the same month Abraham GODFREY marries an Ann Allen. > Have > I got this right? > > > > The 1881 Census says Ann was born in Newthorpe Notts, and aged 31 it would > mean she could have been born about 1850 but I can find no trace of her > birth > > > > Can anyone help please? Am using Reunion which is for apple mac computers only. It provides for an override of the date format, as well as allowing before after about etc. I use the override facility to put in (say) qtr Mar 1900, so that I can immediately recognise that the date is a Registration Date from (probably) FreeBMD rather than a known month and year from some other source. Point being that a registered date could occur many months after the birth and alerts me to a possible discrepancy in the age at death, which is automatically calculated by Reunion. I have just been inputting the same details into FTM tonight. If you enter something like Jul-Sep 1888 then it will turn it into Bet. I would like to verify all details of a marriage reportedly at St. Mary, Nottingham, Notts., in or near 1721 or 1722 between William Thornton and Mary Brown. Thank you very much for your help with this! Bob
1. Even at this stage, some people did not always know when they were born and dtes varied between censuses 2. Some parents did not record their births, others did not fill in census forms 'prying government' (My g grandfather, born 15 sept 1859 was never registered, discovered at his death in 1932, when they tried to find proof of his birth. Husband's great grandfather's brother refused to complete a census form 1881 - same reason) 3. Some people think they were born where they grew up - not necessarily the same, also names of small places, little villages, might be variously used as names at different censuses. Can't help about the marriages! Given the way the quarters are marked on the index books as Mar, Jun, Sep, Dec, I use qtr Jun 1901 qtr Dec 1860 for example. That way I can easily recognise the source of that information. Later GRO data has months rather than quarters, without qtr (or something) one could confuse them. The fractions were very good when most systems contained a fraction font, to my annoyance most don't nowadays, and the other convention 1/4 2/4 3/4 4/4 can look extremely peculiar, especially if there is no space between the 4 and the following word. The 1881 census has John GODFREY Age 28 with wife Ann age 31 living in Kirby in Ashfield. There is a wedding in December 1875 where John appears to have married Ann Wright but also in the same month Abraham GODFREY marries an Ann Allen. Have I got this right? The 1881 Census says Ann was born in Newthorpe Notts, and aged 31 it would mean she could have been born about 1850 but I can find no trace of her birth Can anyone help please? It would be much appreciated Thanks Margaret
