    3. Hi Sharon, Thoresby Hall not far from Edwinstowe is the home of the Manvers Family, all very posh. I once went there about 40 years ago to render a small service to the Dowager Countess Manvers, who was the widow of a cavalry officer killed in the first world war so I was led to believe. 3. Heather, Thanks for that. I not only use the Reunion program but also a word processing program for notes etc. I made a template so that the setting would be the same for these notes from one family to another. I have a footer which contains the following information: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ p# of # Modified - 22/1/09 Created - Wed 31 Mar 2004 RD-Registration Distrct SRD-Sub Registration District (If not shown, same as RD) ED-Enumerator's District EP-Ecclesiastical Parish f-folio p-page s-schedule GRO Indexes - Age at death from Jun 1866: mother's maiden name from Sept 1911: spouse's surname from Mar 1912: date of births in deaths from 1969 10 Mar 1801 27 Mary 1811 28 Mary 1821 30 May 1831 7 Jun 1841 30 Mar 1851 7 Apr 1861 2 Apr 1871 3 Apr 1881 5 Apr 1891 31 Mar 1901 2 Apr 1911 19 Jun 1921 26 Apr 1931 (destroyed) 29 Sep 1939 (WW2 Nat Reg 100 yr closure) 8 Apr 1951 23 Apr 1961 26 Apr 1971 5 Apr 1981 21 Apr 1991 29 Apr 2001 (100 yr closure) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The first line contains a page number and a page count: also a modification date, together with a created date; The second line reminds me of the abbreviations I use for each census extraction in the body of the document. The third line reminds me of the dates relevant in a search in the GRO indexes. The final line reminds me of all the census dates. The font is very small in the document, but of course it will still "waste" some space in the body of the document. However the advantage to having it at my "fingertips" outweighs the disadvantage of having a "shorter" page. You are so right, it is extremely interesting to learn how other people have solved these various recording problems we face. Many thanks JK On Thu, Jan 22, 2009 at 7:54 PM, The Quineys <pquiney@post.com> wrote: > Hi JK > > By all means copy my use of the actual census date for BEFs and AFTs - I > probably got the idea from someone else in the first place ;-) If you > need a full list of dates, try http://rmhh.co.uk/dates.html, though I > see 1911 release date hasn't been updated yet. > > Re: entering GRO quarter dates - if I see something along the lines of > "Bet Jan-Mar 1850", I tend to recognise it as GRO entry. 3. Hi JK By all means copy my use of the actual census date for BEFs and AFTs - I probably got the idea from someone else in the first place ;-) If you need a full list of dates, try http://rmhh.co.uk/dates.html, though I see 1911 release date hasn't been updated yet. Re: entering GRO quarter dates - if I see something along the lines of "Bet Jan-Mar 1850", I tend to recognise it as GRO entry. I also record the district, vol and pg details in the notes field. It's another reason why I try to find the corresponding baptism (or burial) and adjust the date range accordingly. It's always interesting hearing how others record information - thanks :-) Heather J K gen wrote: > All this makes excellent sense, although not so sure about the ones > you use for the GRO entry. 3. Hi all, I am sure that someone on this list was a great help in this MARSH family of mine some years ago. I start with Henry Marsh. b. c 1816. He married Elizabeth either HEMSTOCK or BROWN in the 4th Quarter 1837. Anyone know which? I may have to buy the cert! In 1861 Henry and his wife were living in Lidget Lane Moorgate with three of his children, one of whom was Hannah aged 19. Also living with the family was Clara A. Marsh, shown as grand daughter in the census.Who are her parents? I am presently trying to discover if this is the same Clara living in Islington in 1911, shown as a grocer. My grandmother( orphaned early in life) had an Aunt Clara and was living in Islington with the Aun.Clara. Just in addition, grandson James joined Clara with Henry and Elizabeth in 1871, no sign of Hannah, but daughter Elizabeth aged 19 was still living at home. Any help gratefully received. 3. Hello All, I have been watching the thread on entering BMDs on the FTM program. My method: I just put in the start/end months of the quarter in which registration took place. Then I click on the small "scroll" symbol and that takes you to a page where it is possible to put a fuller description of the registration. For example, in footnotes I put - GRO birth reg, Islington, 1st quarter 1899, vol1b, pg 169. Of course to view this you would always have to click on the scroll. Which, by the way, looks blank until you have entered some info and then appears to have lines "written" on it. Regards Lynette Surrey

    1. [NTT] THORNTON/BROWNE marriage
    2. a PS: I forgot to add that I also checked the Cotgrave PRs (Phillimore) as sometimes a diligent vicar/curate will enter a marriage of a parishioner marrying in another parish. But in this case he didn't. So no confirmation there. However, I did notice several THORNTON marriages within a few years of the TB marriage so it seems likely that there was a THORNTON family living in the village of Cotgrave at that time. HTH Ruth

    1. Re: [NTT] Marriage Licences
    2. Thanks John for the reminder. All documents relating to a particular marriage are listed under the names - you can quote either name in your enquiry but best to give as much info as poss. The archivist will then be able to tell you exactly what documents they hold relating to it. Ruth

    1. [NTT] THORNTON/BROWN marriage
    2. The entry in the St Mary's Nottingham marriage registers published in Phillimore gives the information as already described by Brian Taylor: 12 Apr 1721, William Thornton of Cotgrave m Mary Brown, this p., lic. However, in Nottinghamshire Marriage Licences you can read: 14 April 1722 Wm THORNTON of Cotgrave, whittower, 25, & Mary BROWNE p. St Marys Nottm, spr., 24, at St Marys As I was at the Notts University Archives yesterday - this is where the Notts marriage licences are stored - I checked to see whether they had this particular licence but unfortunately they don't. This is bad news as it is probably lost (unless someone knows different). It's very unusual to have a whole year's difference in dates. There are mistakes in Phillimore but they are few and far between. Ditto Notts Marriage Licences. The only reliable check that you can do now is to look at the PRs for Nottingham St Marys which are held in Notts Record Office. You can look at these on fiche. Maybe some kind Lister will do that for you - or try ringing/emailing the RO yourself - they may help as it's such a 'narrow' look-up. Hope this helps Ruth
