    3. Hi there Can anyone help? I have a Thomas William Robinson's marriage in 1914. He says he is 24 and that his father was James. At the time of his marriage both he and his spouse were residing at the same address - Crocus St, Nottingham. He fought in WW1 - I believe in Sulva Bay, Gallipoli. Although he made it home it is believed he died, probably from his injuries, a little while after 1919, but I don't know where he died. He may have just called himself William because there is a photo with just W Robinson written on it. 'Course he could be just Thomas, too. There are so many possibilities on the 1911 census, in Nottingham, that it makes it too costly to look at each one. Thanks Sheila

    1. [NTT] Elusive George Tebbutt CUNNINGTON - Where was he 1822-1832?
    2. MAVIS JOHNSON
    3. Thank you to John who was able to find George Tebbutt Cunnington and his wife and daughter Alice in Stepney in 1861, sharing a house at 12 Grafton Street, and for sending me the image, also for his further findings and constructive thoughts as to how to proceed. Also to Jean, Margaret, Heather, Lynne, (from Notts List) and Lilias and Janet (from Derbyshire List), for their suggestions. Jean suggested that the following might help others who were looking for lost relatives at this period: The archivist at Chancery Lane (many years ago) told me that in 1861 there was a mass invasion into the capital for the building work connected with the docks, the railways and the Tube. (Much as there is today for the Olympic Village) The Cunnington family were entrepreneurial and well connected and so would seize the opportunity to improve their situation. Thank you for your help. 3. Hi Mavis Have you considered that Letitia & Thomas might be the children of Mary born before her marriage to Tebbutt especially if her age on 1841 census is almost correct? Have you searched for their baptisms under Beardall? if they are hers it is quite normal for them to take on their stepdad's surname. Just another theory to test... 3. This may be a silly question - are you sure theere was a first wife? Yes I see he has a daughter Lettitia born before his marriage to Mary, but she could have been daughter of either or both these parents before their marriage, or his daughter by another woman, not necessarily married to her.... Did he declare himself a widower at that time? I had a long belief (150 years belief!) of a supposed marriage between a single man and a woman with a particular surname, and recently discovered she had a different surname (more prestidigious connexions) and he was a widower! Are you talking Stepney London or elsewhere? Good hunting! 1. [NTT] Elusive George Tebbutt CUNNINGTON - Where was he 1822-1832?
    2. MAVIS JOHNSON
    3. For anyone who likes a challenge. For several years the first marriage of this ancestor and the name of his first wife have eluded me. Tebbutt CUNNINGTON was baptised in King's Cliffe, Northants, and was a Cooper by trade. The first confirmed details in the E. Mids. area are his marriage in Nottingham in 1832 to Mary Beardall born Heanor. (He takes the name of George, using Tebbutt as a middle name, sometime in the period 1801-1841.) 1841 census shows he has adopted the name of George, and is living at Beck Lane, Sneinton, Nottingham, aged 40 with (second) wife Mary, aged 38, and children Lettitia, 15, Thomas, (all born o/s Notts) 10, Elizabeth 5, Thomas (should be Tebbutt) 4, and William 1. (all born in Notts) 1851 he is at 4 Beck St. aged 49, a Cooper, b. Kingscliffe. Mary, still 38, b. Heanor, Lettitia, 24, a Dressmaker, b. Nottm., Tebbutt, 14, Cooper, b. Nottm., William, 10, Errand Boy, and Alice, 7, b. Nottm. Alice is my gt.grandmother. 1861 Believe he was at 45 Carlton Rd., Stepney, as son Thomas at 16 Carlton Rd. and son Tebbutt at 15 Argyle Rd. Stepney. There are large breweries and the docks closeby. The image was indistinct 1871 they are living at Thorneywood Lane, Carlton, Nottingham, and are still there until GTC dies in 1882. Despite renewing my searches over many years, I have been unable for many years to discover: George or Tebbutt CUNNINGTON's (often mistranscibed as Cunningham, Cummington, Cunning, etc.etc.) marriage to his first wife, c1822 onwards? What is her maiden name? Lettitia and Thomas purport to be born at Heanor c1826 and c1828 respectively. (I have not been able to find them in Heanor parish records. They may be in the Ilkeston/Eastwood area where other Cunningtons were found later and probably Non-Conformists. (related to D.E.Lawrence's mother) When did his first wife die and where was she buried (1828-1832 period)? Not found in Heanor or Marlpool burials. I am inclined to think that GTC may have moved into the East Midlands, attracted by the Industrial Revolution and the expansion of the brewery trade. Can anyone offer further information from local resources? Mavis, in Somerset.
