    3. Thank you, Brian, for the very interesting data about the Watch and Ward conscripts. As a dedicated historian I can now add something to my 19thC knowledge which I had never known before. I knew of the Luddites, but not of the opposition system. The COD thinks the term Luddite may have originated with the name of Ned Lud who destroyed machinery in the 18th century. A very brief and hopefully accurate summary (I don't profess to be an expert). In the early 19th century there was a lot of lawlessness, particularly the ransacking and breaking of industrial stocking-knitting factories and frames, as this industrialisation was adversely affecting the income of individual owners of the hand operated smaller machines, as products could be made a lot cheaper. These rioters were lumped together under the name "Luddites" though there has never been an accurate connection established with anyone called Ludd (the tagging and naming of groups with a catchy epithet is not the modern province of the Daily Red Tops that we may think). As there was insufficient policing in those days, laws were passed to "conscript" men to "Watch and Ward". I believe that they watched by day and warded by night. The Watch and Ward acts stipulated that "every person appointed to Watch and Ward, shall during his respective time of "Watching and Warding" to the utmost of his power, endeavour to prevent all murders, burglaries, robberies, affrays, and most felonies, outrages and disorders. And for that end each and every of them in authorised and empowered to arrest and apprehend all nightwalkers, malefactors, rogues, vagabonds, and all other idle , disorderly persons - and to deliver such the person or persons to the constable. In addition, public houses had to be cleared by 10pm, otherwise the landlord could be prosecuted." The men so "conscripted" had to be over the age of 17, occupying lands or tenements of an annual value of less than £20. Nottingham is lucky because these records were saved and have been transcribed by dedicated local historians into searchable records. There are 2 lists, one from 1812 and one from 1816. Given that these lists give names, ages, occupations and addresses of most of the adult male population in 1812 and 1816, they are a most valuable research tool for Family Historians, as they precede the earliest census by 25-29 years. I could add a lot more, but I suggest that interested people "Google" it or go to the Notts Archives. As well as the booklets issued by the Notts FHS, all the Watch and Ward records are in a card index file at the Notts Archives. Incidentally, another major source of early information in a card index at Notts Archives, are the apprenticeship records. I have added greatly to my family history using both of these resources. I apologise if I have made an error in my summary - if so I readily accept corrections - but as no one else was replying, I thought that I would.
