    1. [NTT] West Street Retford C1898 -1900
    2. Hi There, Has anyone got access to a Whites directory for the period 1898 -1900 please? One of my ancestors was born there in 1898 but on the birth certificate there is no mention of the number of the house, only West Street. I know that part of West Street in Retford is still standing so I was hoping I could identify the number then take a visit to view it.(If indeed it is still standing!) The head of the family was named Albert Henry Lacey. thanks in advance Alan Radford, Rotherham, South Yorks

    3. > There were lots of lacemakers in Beds and Bucks in 19th C. While it is very true that people travelled and moved seeking employment, you should be very careful assuming there was synergy between lacemaking in Beds/Bucks and Nottingham. Lacemaking in the Beds/Bucks areas was a traditional hand-made cottage-based industry. Nottingham was the centre for machine-made lace; it had no hand-made tradition in that craft. The skills were very different and, while the hand-made was largely the product of women and girls, machine lacemaking was considered "men's work". The hand-made was eventually eclipsed and largely destroyed by Nottingham-centred machine-made - until its revival as a hobby-craft in the 1970s. Ironically, the hand-made now prospers as a hobby while the Nottingham machine lace making has almost vanished. As a further irony, my wife runs a business supplying the hobby lacemaker - you guessed it, from here in the Nottingham area ! David Hallam david@beeston-notts.co.uk www.beeston-notts.co.uk

    3. This does happen. I have one familly early 20th C where one is born in Notts all others Dewsbury Yorks - They were miners. I went to college in Bucks. There were lots of lacemakers in Beds and Bucks in 19th C. (Before my time!) Do you have more details of which Middx place? That could have been London anyway - seeking to sell work made? Visiting a family and caught short? People did travel, especially for work. 3. Hello, I am looking for information on the COPE family name. ALFRED COPE abt 1836 was born in Middlesex according to all the census. This mistifies me because all his other members of his family came from around Nottingham - Kirkby. His parents were THOMAS COPE abt 1807 Derby and ANN STIRLAND born Kirkby. They had 7 children EMMA 1827 Kirkby, EDWIN 1829 Kirkby, ELIZABETH 1831 Kirkby then came ALFRED 1836 Middlesex, HENRY 1839 Mansfield ANDREW 1839 Hyson Green and finally JANE 1844 New Basford. They all came from a lacemakers back ground. Were did they go between children for one to be born down south? Any help much appreciated. Sue

    1. [NTT] Rejoining... researching STAPLETON
    2. Doug & Jan
    3. Hello List I have rejoined after some time hoping that perhaps someone new may connect to my STAPLETON Family What I have so Far is as follows.. Enoch STAPLETON born about 1836 or 1837 Father is George.. and Mother Sarah... Possibly COOPER but I havent found a Birth for Enoch to confirm Married Mary Ann CRAMPTON in 1865 Cert only has Fathers name on for Both Bride and Groom.. 1841 CENSUS and George age 45 and Sarahage 40 with Family are listed as STABLETON Enoch is age 4 1851 CENSUS Enoch is living at a near by Farm and Sarah and the Rest of the Family Now have as Head of the Family Thomas STABLETON age is 55 for Thomas which is right if the 1841 census is .... Sarah and the Childrens ages are right. also also two Nephew's Jonn and William COOPER are living with the Family. 1861 CENSUS Enoch is back home with Parents... who are again listed as Thomas age 68 and Sarah age 61 Thomas's age is 3 years older.... Enoch's age is correct.. 1871 CENSUS Enoch is married and living in Bourne with his Family and the name is now STAPLETON Mary Ann and Enoch had 4 children George William Sarah Benjamin Enoch Enoch Senior died in 1872 and Mary Ann remarried to a Harry SMITH in 1877 and had another child MaryAnn SMITH.. Enoch Senior's death Cert again only has his Father listed and the is George STAPLETON I have found a marriage for a George STAPLETON to a Sarah COOPER in 1823 in Willoughby on the Wold.... which is where Enoch was born. This marriage fits with the Children's ages on the 1841 Census George and Sarah according to the CENSUS had children ages taken from census.. Ann b 1824 George b 1826 Elizabeth b 1830 Benjamin b 1831 ***birth 17 Oct 1831 Taken from the IGI where Parents are George and Sarah (COOPER) Enoch b 1836 Eliza.. b 1843 does anyone have any of the Above in their Family... Also is George on the 1841 CENSUS and Thomas on the 1851 and 1861 census the same person..... perhaps George Died and Sarah remarried a relative..?????? Enoch according to the Census and Certs.. was born "Willoughby-on-Wolds" but cant confirm yet.. Hoping someone can connect cheers Jan in Hot and sticky Queensland Aust..

    1. [NTT] CROSS - Attenborough
    2. Gill Hart
    3. Could SKS help me with a burial lookup please. I’m looking for Edward CROSS who married Sarah WEST in 1792 in Attenborough. They were still having children in the early 1800’s but Edward is not in the 1841 census or GRO indexes so I assume he died between 1802 and 1837. I would like to know the age at death if it is recorded. I have searched the NBI on FMP, the Notts burial cd (v1) , the GRO death indexes, the BMD registers on The Genealogist and the 1841 census but not found him. Can anyone help please – I’m trying to establish whether he is my ancestor or not. I can’t get to the Notts RO and my local LDS centre has closed so I can no longer order films which would have been my original option. Thank you. Gill
