    1. [NTT] re facebook- genes reunited
    2. Alan M Gagg
    3. I have read a few of the mails on facebook and genes reunited, I would just like to say that Last year I reluctantly joined facebook, did a search on my 'Gagg surname and sent out over two hundred messages to 'Gagg's 'asking if they would kindly send a card or letter to my gt uncle Fred Gagg who was coming up to his 100th birthday on the22nd of October. I also gave some info on my family, the Gagg family history website I run and asked if they were interested in giving any info of their own. Obviously a lot of the 2'00' Gagg's were related to each other, sons' daughters etc. So I did not expect to get replies from all of them. The response was astounding, Fred received letters and cards from all over the world , I had many more come to me for him and had lots of info as well. We found members of the gagg families that had lost touch over the generations and added a lot more to our family histories. All these months on we are still in touch, some of the Gagg's have met up with others. My cousin Pat lives in Canada and through genes reunited a few years ago we found a part of my gt granddad's family that we did not know existed. The coincidence was that Joan lived in the same small town as my cousin Pat's daughter Debbie and her husband Mike. Joan's brother owned the local car spares shop where Mike and Debbie were regular customers not knowing they were related. The two families are now friends and regularly meet up. I now have 'wedding' photos of my gt granddad and gt gran, letters from his brother and other photos , poems etc that we never knew existed. Going back to facebook, I found some Gagg's also living in Kingston, neither Joan's family or Debbie's family knew of them, they are now in touch with each other and we have added another layer to the 'Gagg' family history. I have many more stories of people found and information exchanged by using genes reunited and facebook, including finding a lost part of my mum's family in Australia and seeing photos of my granddad's father and his half sisters that we had never seen before. So in conclusion I would say try them , phrase your inquiry in a friendly manner , offer a little info and ask if they would like to give some of there info, dangling the carrot of more info in exchange. You might be pleasantly surprised and could find that lost piece of info that has been bugging you.. Alan

    1. Re: [NTT] Bicycle Maker
    2. Brian Binns
    3. Christine, You are partly correct, but sadly Raleigh cycles are not made in Nottingham now. They have a much smaller base in Kimberley. Raleigh certainly had a big presence in Nottingham in 1911, with their massive factory in Lenton. I have researched a sideshoot of my tree, CAMPION, and they had a cycle business on Robin Hood Street, Nottingham, with another CAMPION making cycles under the Gazelle name on Russell Street (I'm not certain but this could have been the old Raleigh factory before they moved to Lenton). One of William Campion's employees was Thomas Humber, who later founded his own cycle factory in Beeston, but by 1908 had moved to Coventry. This company evolved into The Humber Car Company. Campion's also made motor cycles and had at least 4 cycle shops in Nottingham, as well as branches in Leicester and Mansfield. They later moved into motor tricycles. William's son Edwin William CAMPION also ran The Sir Colin Campbell pub on Robin Hood Street. Edwin was an active member of the Nottingham Naturalists society, and one of his sons, George was a local archaeologist who helped research and map the Broad Marsh/Drury Hill caves in the 1930s. Brian Binns -----Original Message----- From: nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nottsgen-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Christine Sadler Sent: 20 March 2009 16:05 To: NOTTSGEN@rootsweb.com Subject: [NTT] Bicycle Maker I am researching JOSEPH ARTHUR WEBB born 1880 in Ireland. In 1911 he was living in Nottingham and his occupation was described as "Machine Hand Tools - Cycle Maker". I know that Raleigh bicycles are made in Nottingham now and wonder whether the company was there in 1911 - or if there were other bicycle makers at that time. Joseph was married to MARTHA (nee Scott) and their children were Charlotte, Rose Edith, Doris Mary and Arthur. Doris and Arthur were born in Nottingham. The family moved to London later because their fifth child, William George, was born in Lewisham in 1916. I would really like to track down Joseph's grandchildren who may still be alive today. 1. [NTT] Surname SCOTT
    2. Christine Sadler
    3. I am researching the SCOTT family from Nottingham. George Scott was born in Radford, Notts about 1860. He was a French Polisher. In 1881 he married Charlotte MOORE and their first child, born 1882, was MARTHA ELIZABETH. Martha married Joseph Arthur WEBB. They moved around quite a bit, but two of their children were born in Nottingham - Arthur (1905) and Doris (1910). Is anyone else researching the same family?

    1. Re: [NTT] EITCHER George
    2. Roy Stockdill
    3. From: "Brian Binns" <bnbinns@gmail.com> > The surname ETCHES has been around Nottingham for years. > That becomes clear when you look at Surname Atlas and the distribution of the name in the 1881 census. There were 345 people called ETCHES throughout Britain, 61 of them - the greatest number - in Nottinghamshire. Next highest number 59, were in Yorkshire West Riding, followed by 44 in Derbyshire, which seems to suggest some Nottinghamshire Etches families had crept across the adjoining county borders. This is a very common factor when you are examining the likely epicentre of a particular surname. When sub-divided into Poor Law Unions (registration and enumeration districts), the largest number of individual entries were in Nottingham itself (22), followed by Derby (20) and Sheffield (15). There were only 23 people with the name ETCHER in the whole country in 1881 - none at all in Nottinghamshire - and not a single EITCHER. This leads me to believe even more that the George Eitcher spoken of by the OP was originally a transcription error or a "rogue" family with the wrong name, especially since there are only two Eitchers - George and his presumed son George William in the whole of FreeBMD and none at all in any census apart from Mary Eitcher (George's wife) in 1891, nor are there any in the IGI when one switches on exact spelling. For the OP - I have just discovered that both ETCHES and ETCHER are registered with the Guild of One-Name Studies. If you go to our website at www.one-name.org and follow the links, you will be able to discover the name of the person doing the study. It's a lady in East Yorkshire. Maybe she can help. She also shows ETCHELLS as one of her names and this, of course, is the name of the well-known genealogist Guy Etchells, a friend of mine, to whom we all owe a huge debt of thanks since he is the man who by confronting TNA with a Freedom of Information request forced them to issue the 1911 census two yeas early! -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."
