    3. Hi All   I don't wish to put any spokes in the wheel so to speak, but are we 100% sure that we should give out living people's details on our lists.   I work for the Government and under our DPA rules we are not allowed to give out any details unless prior consent from the person in question. I know there is a great deal to be found about anybody these days, if we search hard enough, but we have to remember that security for what ever reason is of the utmost importance, especially in our current climate.   We, at our place of work have procedures to follow even if the police require information, we must remember that Loan Sharks and Debt Collectors all have devious ways of tracing people and may use even this list as a way of tracking a person down. In no way am I saying that this is the case, but are we sure?   I'm sorry, to be a spoil sport in all of this, but would it be better if we could advise the person on how to trace rather than pass any relevant information on. For example 192.com. All the Best Pat Williams

    3. You show the place as Notting. Are you certain it is Nottingham or is it Notting Hill? You refer to London, Noting which I'm afraid doesn't make sense, unless it is Notting Hill, London. I'm sure that if you recheck your names and facts and come back to this list, someone will point you in the right direction. 3. Following Roy's very clear description, I decided to see if I could find your Edwin jnr's birth. I doubt that I did, although there are 10 listed Edwin Stanleys between 1842 and 1848 inclusive. Their registration districts are Madeley, Manchester, Newington, Stafford, Horncastle Woodstock, Holborn, S.Stoneham, Hay and Stroud. If you think any of these might be yours, just contact me. My great grandfather never got registered (1859) and no-one knows why. They discovered in 1932 when they were trying to arrange his funeral. my mother remembered the kerfuffle. A cousin of my husband's, about 3 generations back, neither recorded his children's births, nor a census or two because he felt the government was prying! Has it occurred to you that if Edwin's mother died following his birth, they may just have forgotten to register him whilst they were worried because of her illness and death? The 1861 census at Findmypast has Edwin Stanley, hosiery manufacturer, born Leicester 1822, wife Charlotte, b Crick, Northamptonshire 1821, and four children as follows:- Sarah C (indexed as such but it could be an E), b Nottingham 1845 Edwin, b Nottingham 1847 William, b Nottingham 1851 Emma, b Nottingham 1854 Clearly, Sarah and Edwin were from the first marriage and William and Emma from the second. In the 1851 census Edwin jr's birth year is also given as 1847 and Sarah's as 1845, so Sarah was the elder. I cannot find a birth for Edwin jr with FreeBMD at Nottingham, so perhaps he wasn't recorded. It was not uncommon in the early years of civil registration. Unless, of course, Edwin had another name that he was born in but didn't use later. There's an Elizabeth Stanley (not Sarah Elizabeth) in 1845, William in 1850 and Emma in 1853, which more or less equate with their ages in 1861. Haven't found Edwin's first marriage yet but it's always possible there wasn't actually one. There are three deaths of Stanley females at Nottingham in the appropriate period and presumably it must have occurred in 1847 or later when Edwin was born and before 1850 when Edwin sr was married again. There was an Ann Stanley in the Sep qtr of 1847, Mary Ann in the June qtr of 1848 and Rosetta in the Dec qtr of 1849. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Jim, I know that you've had a reply, but did you know that the pronunciation of Boughton in Nottinghamshire is Boo-ton. The -ough ending in many English villages/towns has so many different pronunciations - -uff, -awe, -oo, -ow as in bow and arrow, ow as in cow, and just -er. I have 2 births in the parish, ca: 1844 and 1854, but Boughton does not show as a Record Office in the list of Record Offices in Free BMD. Thank you for reading and answering my request.
