Nivard, Thanks, but when I said I have looked everywhere, indeed I have! notably India, Ireland, US as well as UK. Given his birth was Jan 1916, and there are variations - 20/21/26 Jan, my gut feeling is that a single mother never recorded him during the War and dad was either already married or did not return. I have checked ALL those records (as best as I can). Well over a year ago I asked the GRO to double check for me and they reimbursed half my fee as they too, failed to find him. Conflicting info over parentage Coffee planter/naval were the ones hinted at to friends and in Sandhurst archives, but no name and quite probably a fiction. I joined FIBIS (Families in British India) The only reason he is listed as Indian is because he was in an Indian regiment at the time - the Garhwalis - in his own letters he said that he had never been to India before a passing visit in 1937/8 (when with Sussex or Suffolk reg- he was briefly in Suff, longer in Suss) and got an army scholarship to Sandhurst - yes, I have been in touch with them too - lots of info! He joined the Gars because of a close friend, with whom he had spent almost all his army life. That friend died aged 91 last Nov having had Alzheimers for many years. His much younger wife (15/20 years?) has been exceptionally helpful. I know someone of my own generation, Indian by birth, who was listed as British whilst in the navy and his daughter born in that period does not have Indian nationality. When he came out, his nationality reverted to Indian! Hi Jean Have you checked the overseas births for him I notice he is given as Indian nationality on the CWGC, was he the son of a soldier and born in India perhaps, many Army sons were sent back to Britain for schooling Best wishes Nivard Ovington, in Cornwall (UK) > > If you come across any NUGENT between the years 1860ish and 1930 please > can you flag it up for me? > > I am still looking in vain for the father of David Richard Nugent born Jan > 1916 who subsequently went to Worksop College 1928-1934. > > It is a long story. If you come across any NUGENT between the years 1860ish and 1930 please can you flag it up for me? I am still looking in vain for the father of David Richard Nugent born Jan 1916 who subsequently went to Worksop College 1928-1934. It is a long story. I know that his mother Bertha, b, around 1877 (later calling herself Irene) lived with her only child and died in Sussex in 1947. He was executed by the Japanese for an escape attempt in Malaysia on Sept 11 1942. This is the best I can find, after exhaustive research! I can find no marriage of his parents, no birth cert for him or his mother - ANYWHERE! Why the connexion to Worksop? Did Bertha marry? Was she single? Who paid for the college fees? I have been in touch with the archivist there and we have exchanged lots of info, but I cannot find any other atecedents for these two.
