William is a descendant of Joshua Norwood, III, of Mount Desert, Maine. I have begun reading the novel and will try to review it later. I'm only nine chapters into the story. I think Allison has done a great job on chapters 8 & 9. His description is very strong, as is his research of the context for his story. Both of these things were announced on this list in 2006. I just picked up and am reading /1066, The Year of the Conquest/, by David Howarth, and published in 1981 by Penguin Books. It's a page-turner, small, 200 pages, very nicely written. When you read it, you feel that England before the conquest was a special place indeed, almost idyllic. You can even see the seeds of democracy already planted and rooting, though many centuries will pass before they fully sprout. Another book about Harold that I enjoyed very much is /Harold, The Last Anglo-Saxon King/, by Ian W. Walker, published in 1997 by Sutton Publishing, Ltd. It is very detailed, thorough, and also nicely written with maps, charts, pictures, bibliography, and copious notes. Of course, since it can't be proved that the Norwoods stem from the Godwin family through Harold, these books have to satisfy our interest in a significant juncture in English history, not necessarily our origins. For some reason, although I have come to understand this, Harold still holds a special place in my mind and heart. I am not much of a researcher but the 1850 census of San Augustine Co TX show my g-g-g-grandfather William Coleson Norwood age 55, came to TX with wife Eliza Wade LeGrand 43, and children Hampton 17, Thomas15, James LeGrand 12 (was my g-g-grandfather, Eliza 10, Adaline 7, Sarah 5, and child Edwin O. was born in TX. All except Edwin born in NC. William Coleson came to TX with Edwin O LeGrand (Eliza's brother) to fight for the TX Independance from Mexico. TX won Independance from Mexico in 1836 so my question is where was his family from 1836 to first time they shows up on San Augustine County Property Tax Roll in 1848. On the 1880 census he is still living,,,,,he is 86 and has 38 year old wife.???? He was granted a section of land for his services to TX. My guess is from the following records they were traveling.....or traveled so far and waited for his return. Can anyone help here? On Cemetery records his father is listed as Thomas Norwood and mother as Jame Coleson. He was born 11 Oct 1794 and died 27 June 1885. Child Amanda Norwood age 20 married around 1849 a Charles W. Crouch. They also came to TX. Their children are John 18 born TN, William 16 born TN, Elizabeth 13, born MS, Lucretia 4 born TX, and Martha 2 born TX. But as you can see John, William, and Elizabeth could not possibly be Amanda's children from ages. Lucretia and Martha could be 2nd wife's but I don't know for sure. Then since record show Amanda as his 3rd wife I personally don't feel as if any of these children could be Amanda's. First was _____ Brown, 2nd was a Martha A Smith he either married in 1844 or she died in 1844, Third is Amanda M. Norwood who supposed to have married in 1849 and this is 1850 census'. Am I wrong? The 1850 San Augustine Co TX census records show a Laura Emma Norwood 24 married to a John Jacob Carswell age 27 born NC. In the 1850 census their children are William age 4 born in TX and Edwin age 2 born in TX. Also on the 1850 census is listed a Catharine Norwood Ware age 38 born in SC. She is a widow of Nimrod W. Ware, Sr. with children Louisa 14 born in AL, James E. 13, born in TN, Theophilus 11 born in TX, Frances 1 born in TX. Is she William sister, daughter, or cousin? Can any of you help? I still live in the same community where he settled and had always know this land in the beginning was his but as a 60 year old woman I began to get interested in the family genealogy. The decendance for a few years named children all the same so its hard to keep them seperated for me.
