Dear Listers! I am sure many of you have heard of Arne Brekke and his tours to Norway! I received this message this afternoon from an assistant of his in Grand Forks, ND. I thought I would let you know... Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > I wanted to let you know that Arne Brekke died last night. I do not know exactly what happened because I have been in Sweden the past two weeks, but it sounds like he had a heart attack. I know Arne had many friends and business contacts in Norway, and please tell others who may have known Arne of this sad news. > > Michael Swanson >
This is indeed sad news. The Norwegian American community has lost a great resource. There is an obituary posted at: https://www.grandforksherald.com/news/education/4465328-arne-brekke-90-remembered-commitment-norwegian-heritage Note that Arne is responsible for the bygdebok collection at the University of Norway Dakota, which is the largest such collection in the United States. Having visited the Chester Fritz at UND several times, I am quite familiar, and appreciative, of its collection. I came across a 1957 article in the Globe-Gazette of Mason City, Iowa, at newspapers.com, that I had saved (it happened to be on the same page as someone I was looking for) that talks of his tour beginnings. "Luther Professor Plans Tour of Europe in Summer" - for anyone who might be interested.
