Dear Listers, This is a topic which has been discussed before, but I have today received some interesting information which may help find out more about this interesting person! Edward Sidenbender - son of Charles Thomas Sidenbender (IN) and Guro «Julia» Nelson Beim (NOR), born in St. Paul, MN Apr. 20, 1883 and christened Sep 1, 1884 (re: Christ Lutheran church in St. Paul, MN) or born in St. Paul, MN Dec. 28, 1882 (re: records of the orphanage where he lived until 1895 and the State Public School of Owatonna, MN who was responsible for him from 1895 until he obtained majority on Dec. 28, 1900 In the 1885 census he still lives at home in St. Paul, MN with his parents In the 1895 census he lives at the orphanage in St. Paul, MN In the 1900 census we find him working as a farm laborer with the Alfred Frederick family near Wells, Faribault Co., MN. Until today this was the last we knew of him! In 1907 his (adopted) brother Clarence (Sidenbender) Daggett inquired at the State Public School about him, and he got the following answer: ~~~~~~~~~ Mr. Clarence Daggett Dodge Center, Minn. Dear Sir: I have looked up your brother Edward on our records, and find our last word from him is as follows: Nov. 11, 1903 Edward called at the school for the money due to him from Alfred Frederick, of Wells, Minn., at whose home he was brought up. He stated that after leaving Mr. Frederick's home he went to Seattle, where he shipped on a sailing vessel for Honolulu. Later he went on a government transport to Japan, where he took a sailing vessel for Sydney. He then went to Manila, then to St. Petersburg, Russia, and from there to Hong Kong, China. From there he took a sailing vessel around the Cape of Good Hope to New York, and then came west to Minnesota. He is now going to the northern part of the state to locate on a claim. I expect to be at Wells very soon, and will then see if I can learn anything more from Mr. Frederick's folks about Edward. If I do, I will write. Yours truly, H J J, Agent ~~~~~~~~~ It sure sounds like Edward lived quite an «adventurous» life after he obtained his majority in December of 1900, but now at least we know that in the late fall of 1903 he was heading for Northern Minnesota to settle on a «claim». Still with this information I am unable to «spot» Edward in any later records, and I haven’t yet found him in any passenger records. Is it possible he changed his name?? Or did he go to Canada?? It belongs to the story that Clarence Daggett (1885-1951) later moved to Maryland where he had a family. He never managed to find his brother, and today a granddaughter of his is still trying... Any information anyone can find on Edward and his life would be most interesting, and I thank you all very much for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
