Dear Jerry and other Listers! Thank you very much, Jerry, for your latest messages in regard to John H. Thompson! Too bad there are so many gentlemen with the same name! Now the laborer from Norway township, Fillmore Co., MN 1870 MAY be the one I am looking for, although he lived in kind of the «wrong part» of Fillmore Co. where there are no other Sognings! However, the guy who applied for naturalization in Fillmore Co., MN just HAS TO BE «our guy», with that middle initial!! But now my next question would be: Where is this naturalization record filed? Do I need to contact Fillmore Co., MN directly about it? Does anyone know? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter, and let me wish you all a Happy Memorial Day weekend! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane PS: As you probably know, Memorial Day is another one of those American Holidays which we don’t celebrate over here. But that you do, I very well experienced in 2000, when I had a tight schedule working plan for a Minnesota courthouse on that day! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > On May 24, 2018, at 10:10 PM, Jerry Lloyd <jlloyd@midco.net> wrote: > Naturalization Record > > First Name: JOHN H. > Last Name: THOMPSON > Location: FILLMORE > County: FILLMORE > State: MINNESOTA > Code: 2 > Reel: 1 > Volume: B > Page: 422 ~~~~~~~~~~ > On May 24, 2018, at 7:59 PM, Jerry Lloyd <jlloyd@midco.net> wrote: > John Thompson > in the 1870 United States Federal Census <> > View <> > Name: John Thompson > Age in 1870: 28 > Birth Year: abt 1842 > Birthplace: Norway > Dwelling Number: 100 > Home in 1870: Norway, Fillmore, Minnesota > Race: White > Gender: Male > Occupation: Farm Laborer > Father of Foreign Birth: Y > Mother of Foreign Birth: Y > Household Members: > Name Age > John Thompson <> 28 > > > > From: Lars E. Thompson - another Civil War Soldier > > Dear Mark, Jerry, John, Annette and others Listers! > > Thank you so very much for your latest messages on the topic of this Civil War soldier whom I really suspected was «one of mine». With the info as John H. Thompson born 1841 that would have been a perfect «match»… «My» Johannes Torstenson Hillestad was born in Hafslo, Norway July 12, 1841 emigrated with brothers Sever and Peter as well as their mother Kari and stepfather Arne Hillestad to Lodi, Columbia Co., WI in 1861, but by 1863 they were all in Canton township, Fillmore Co., MN, except for Johannes!! > > Now, if this soldier’s name was really James H. Turton, he is definitely NOT the one I look for. I see one James H. Turton in the 1860 census for Van Buren Co., IA born in NJ about 1840! And this guy under the name James Horace Turton enlisted in IOWA on May 4, 1861; an ancestry family tree shows he died in Arkansas Feb. 29, 1904! > > Are you quite sure, Mark, this is really the same guy? James Turton didn’t ever live in Wisconsin, did he? And I couldn’t find him in the reference you enclosed either, from 31st Infantry Company I! I am sorry if I am not too «bright» when it comes to interpret these military records, but I have so little experience in that area… > > Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! > > Very sincerely yours, > > Lars E. Lars, Just in case no one else has answered -- the Naturalization that Jerry found is at this site, but you have to order it. The last time I ordered a document, I believe it was $27 US, but that was several years ago. Joy http://www.ironrangeresearchcenter.org/details/7/204962 On 5/27/2018 10:31 AM, Lars E. The naturalization papers the I have seen from this era are very limited...they state the age and country they are from but nothing about place of birth. Later decades may have the name of the ship they arrived on. I think some copies of naturalization papers for Minnesota are at the history library in St. Paul. I think I have seen my Kjerrinaes family records there. I will give John H. one more try. I am going to the Norwegian Genealogy Library today and I will look through some Norwegian/American Lutheran Church records to see if I can find these Thompsons on the books. I have looked at them in the past and sometimes they can be helpful. (Assuming they went to church and that the Pastor kept up the records).
