Thompson - another Civil War Soldier Dear Listers, As I recently had an inquiry about lookups of Civil War Soldiers, this person showed up: > John H. Thompson > in the Ohio, Soldier Grave Registrations, 1804-1958 > > Ohio, Soldier Grave Registrations, 1804-1958 > > Name: > John H. Thompson > [T Thompson] > > Birth Date: > 1841 > > Enlistment Date: > 1 Sep 1861 > > Discharge Date: > 12 Jun 1865 > > Burial Place: > Sharon, Ohio, USA > > Cemetery: > Old Sharon > > Rank: > Private > > Branch of Service: > Army https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/32990488/john-thompson I am looking for one John Torstenson Hillestad aka John H. Thompson, born in Hafslo parish, Luster Co., Norway on July 12, 1841, emigrated in 1861 to Lodi, WI and would «logically» enlist in Wisconsin! This John H. Thompson buried at Sharon, OH would be a perfect «match», but my big question remains: Did he enlist from Wisconsin, or is this an entirely different person? Thanks a million for any suggestions in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. 3. Dear Mark, Jerry, John, Annette and others Listers! Thank you so very much for your latest messages on the topic of this Civil War soldier whom I really suspected was «one of mine». With the info as John H. Thompson born 1841 that would have been a perfect «match»… «My» Johannes Torstenson Hillestad was born in Hafslo, Norway July 12, 1841 emigrated with brothers Sever and Peter as well as their mother Kari and stepfather Arne Hillestad to Lodi, Columbia Co., WI in 1861, but by 1863 they were all in Canton township, Fillmore Co., MN, except for Johannes!! Now, if this soldier’s name was really James H. Turton, he is definitely NOT the one I look for. I see one James H. Turton in the 1860 census for Van Buren Co., IA born in NJ about 1840! And this guy under the name James Horace Turton enlisted in IOWA on May 4, 1861; an ancestry family tree shows he died in Arkansas Feb. 29, 1904! Are you quite sure, Mark, this is really the same guy? James Turton didn’t ever live in Wisconsin, did he? And I couldn’t find him in the reference you enclosed either, from 31st Infantry Company I! I am sorry if I am not too «bright» when it comes to interpret these military records, but I have so little experience in that area… Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter!
