Hello. I am trying to find any relatives of Ole Nilsen Christiansen (b.1858 Drammen) and Gunhilda Nilsen Andersen (b. 1865 Drammen). They emigrated to the US in 1880s and married here, but I know many family members remained in Norway. I also hope to find information about their ancestors to add to what little I have already found. Thank you for any replies. Carolyn Smith Agenjo Long Island, NY
*Do you have their American death certificates? Census data? What American surname did they use?** ** **For the time period, Gunhilda would have had a patronymic name that consisted of her father's first name and the suffix datter (usually abbreviated dt, dr, dtr). Was her father's first name Nils or Anders? Or something else and you're using her husband's patronym, or her husband's father's patronym?** ** **Was Ole's father's first name Nils or Christian?** ** **Although some people in Scandinavia started using permanent surnames before 1900, Norway went to a permanent family name or surname system by law in 1923 (it might be a patronymic name, or it might be a farm/location name). Before that records are normally kept by their first name, sometimes middle name, and patronymic name. If you don't understand the patronymic naming system, none of the Scandinavian records will make sense, since the patronym usually changed every generation, and always consisted of the father's first name + sen (abbr: s) for male offspring, and + datter (abbr: dr, dt, dtr) for female offspring. Women kept their own patronymic names their entire lives. (Denmark has the sen/datter suffixes, and Sweden has sson/dotter suffixes after the father's first name; Sweden went to a permanent surname by law in 1902. Denmark was much earlier in the nineteenth century, but records are often still kept as they always had been before that.)** ** **Were either born in Drammen..., or was that just the port of departure? The reason I ask: When I was a teen and first asking about my Norwegian ancestors and asked my grandfather "Where did your parents come from?" his reply was "Trondheim." Some 40+ years later I realized the port of embarkation (the 'place they came from') was Trondheim, but the location(s) where they were born and lived before emigrating was north and west of Trondheim, mostly on the southerly shore of the Skarnsundet. In an adjoining family that married into one of my maternal lines, there was the same kind of mix-up. They "came from Drammen" according to family legend..., but they were born and lived at a location in Buskerud, inland from Drammen. Drammen was only the port of embarkation. As luck would have it, I found a source in America that had the patriarch's Bible records with that of each child's birth, baptism, the date of emigration, and the names of the ships they sailed on. The parents followed last along with grandchildren, but he didn't record their emigration info.** ** **First, get the death certificates and see if the parents and their locations of birth are listed (sometimes one gets lucky and the relative giving the info has it correct). Sometimes marriage info has the correct birth location, and maybe the parents' names. Census data reveals more. The 1900 US census would be the best since that would list their month and year of birth, and (if listed correctly) the year of immigration and year of naturalization (or that they are resident aliens, depending on their immigrant status).** ** **In any case, you need the American data before attempting research in Norwegian records. Once in Norwegian records one should be able to find microfilm images (and sometimes transcriptions) of their records back to the first records of your line.** ** **Beste,** **Bev* On 5/17/2018 2:43 PM, Carolyn Agenjo wrote: > Hello. Hei Carolyn, This may or may not be your Ole, but here is the only 8-year-old that I can find in Drammen's 1865 census who fits your description: Ole Nilsen Christiansen, son of Ole Petter Christiansen & Sophie Martine (f) Nilsdatter. http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=1&filnamn=f60602&gardpostnr=750&personpostnr=9196&merk=9196#ovre ENTRY #146 is Ole Nielsen Christiansen, born 30 August / baptized 14 November 1858 https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/1137/245?indexing= I find nothing to come close to matching Gunhilda born in 1865. I just came across a 'possibility' for your Gunhilda in the 1875 census: Gunhilde Andersen, born in 1865, father is Niels Andersen, born 1832 in Modum; wife is Maren Andersen, born 1832 in Drammen https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01052110003892 So, we have the combination of Gunhilde Nielsen Andersen withthe correct birth year. IF the below is the correct find, this would be her birth registration: Gunhilde Nilsdatter Bergfjerdingen, born 07 September 1865 / baptized 21 May 1866 https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/1066/250 Clark in Japan On 18-May-18 10:28 PM, Clark Pederson wrote: > I just came across a 'possibility' for your Gunhilda in the 1875 census: > Gunhilde Andersen, born in 1865, father is > Niels Andersen, born 1832 in Modum; wife is > Maren Andersen, born 1832 in Drammen > https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01052110003892 > > So, we have the combination of > Gunhilde Nielsen Andersen withthe correct birth year. > Have a nice day! > Clark in Japan > On 18-May-18 10:00 PM, Clark Pederson wrote: >> Hei Carolyn, >> This may or may not be your Ole, but here is the only 8-year-old that >> I can find in Drammen's 1865 census who fits your description: >> Ole Nilsen Christiansen, son of Ole Petter Christiansen & Sophie >> Martine (f) Nilsdatter. >> http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=1&filnamn=f60602&gardpostnr=750&personpostnr=9196&merk=9196#ovre >> >> >> ENTRY #146 is Ole Nielsen Christiansen, born 30 August / baptized 14 >> November 1858 >> https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/1137/245?indexing= >> >> I find nothing to come close to matching Gunhilda born in 1865. >> Have a nice day! >> Clark in Japan >> >> On 18-May-18 4:43 AM, Carolyn Agenjo wrote: >>> Hello.
