Dear Carol, Jerry and other Listers! Thank you very much for your great message and in particular I want to thank you, Carol, for your generous offer to check for Civil War soldiers at the National Archives tomorrow. I know I have several names I would like to check in addition to Christen Olson Dahl, but you didn’t give me much time to make a list(!)... * Christen Olson Dahl would be an obvious part of this list, but I would also be interested in any finding you can make regarding these guys: * Arne Hanson Urness, born in Hafslo Aug. 7, 1839, emigrated in 1861 and entered the War from Vermont township, Dane Co., WI. We know he was sick for a long time at Little Rock, AR, but he was discharged in Brownsville, TX in 1865. What later became of him is still a big «mystery»! * Hans Christenson Urness, born in Hafslo Sep. 30, 1843, emigrated in 1862, also to Vermont township, Dane Co., WI. I have not found him in any roosters so far, but he appears to have been killed in the War. Anyway he was thought to be dead by 1868! * Christopher Larson Lindgjerde, aka Christopher Lewis, born in Luster Apr. 28, 1842, emigrated in 1862 to Dane Co., WI and enlisted that same year. It is being told he carried on as a Professional Soldier after the war, but his destiny is unknown! He was never heard from again after 1887! * Christopher Lasseson Ronnei, aka Christopher Lewis, born in Luster Jan. 18, 1835, emigrated in 1860 to Columbia Co., WI. After the War he moved to Ft. Dodge, IA where he died about 1886! * Christopher Anderson Ness, aka Christopher Anderson, a first cousin of my own great grandfather, born in Luster Feb. 29, 1832, emigrated in 1861 to Fillmore Co., MN, returned from the War and still resided in Fillmore Co., MN in 1880, later destiny unknown! * Johannes Torstenson Hillestad, aka John H. Thompson, born in Hafslo July 12, 1841, emigrated in 1861 to Lodi, Columbia Co., WI and supposedly fought in the Civil War, but was never heard from again. May have been killed? * Peter Torstenson Hillestad. aka Peter H. Thompson, brother of John, born in Hafslo Aug. 16, 1839, emigrated in 1861 to Lodi, Columba Co., WI and shall have fought in the Civil War, married about 1868 and farmed in Fillmore Co., MN. This is all I can come up with right at this time, but these names should keep you busy for a while… Thanks a million, Carol, for any information you can find on these young men! Good Luck! Very sincerely yours, Lars E.
