Are you ready for another «challenge» in Minnesota, or wherever this family ended up? Ingeborg Andersdotter Raaum, born in Jostedal, Luster Co., Norway Jan. 8, 1848, emigrated in 1901 from Sogndal and married at Sebeka, Wadena Co., MN Nov. 11, 1903 to a widower, Nels Peter Nordvall, born in Borgsjo, Sweden May 21, 1851. They farmed in Rockwood township near Sebeka, Wadena Co., MN where Nels died Apr. 16, 1924. Ingeborg survived him, but completely DISAPPEARS. I find her nowhere in 1930 or 1940, and she is not in the MNDI. I should mention she did have a son while still unmarried in Norway: * Anders Andersson aka Andrew A. Raaum, born in Luster Co., Norway Sep. 4, 1869, emigrated with his grandmother in 1883 to Buffalo Co., WI, but later lived for a while in Lac qui parle Co., MN as well as in Norway township, Roberts Co., SD where he purchased land in 1901. Then he also DISAPPEARS. Any suggestions as to what became of mother and son in the US (or Canada) would be more than welcome! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. 3. Dear Jerry and other Listers! Thank you very much, Jerry for your messages in regard to Andrew A. Raaum. The one in Divide Co., ND 1930 is a 1st cousin of the Andrew I am looking for, and I have that family well compiled already. However, the one you have from the Idaho death index I am unable to find. And your entry doesn’t give us any dates! Could you please send me the exact references to that one? Then I can tell you that Ingeborg’s death record just showed up in Minnesota. Here it goes (from FamilySearch): Name Mrs. Niles Nordval Gender Female Death Date 26 May 1926 Death Place Shingobee, Cass, Minnesota Age 78 Birth Date 1848 Father's Name Unknown <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDQ8-S61> Mother's Name Unknown <https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FDQ8-SXM> And on Find-a-grave there is an entry for her being buried under that rather «corrupted» name at Walker, Cass Co., MN https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/82062648/nels-nordval And with this information I am obviously VERY INTERESTED in finding Ingeborg’s OBITUARY. Can someone please help me here? Thanks again a million for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. 3. Dear Jerry and other Listers! Thank you very much, Jerry, for sending me off list copies of the Idaho death record mentioning Andrew Raaum. I have studied the record, and I discover; John Johnson was indeed born in Luster County, Norway at the Raaum farm, but belongs to an entirely different family! And his father’s name was NOT Andrew Raaum! So, «our» Andrew A. Raaum is still a big «mystery», but maybe if his mother’s obituary can be found, we’ll finally learn what became of the son… Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! 3. I noticed in the 1930 census information given by Jerry Lloyd that families were asked if they had a radio set. That shows how important the government thought this new form of communication was. Though Herbert Hoover was President in 1930, as the US sank into the Great Depression, it was our next President, F.D. Roosevelt who made good use of radio broadcasts with "Fireside Chats." While some farms had electricity in 1930, many did not. Roosevelt and Congress passed the Rural Electrification Act of 1936, which assisted in the creation of the electrical infrastructure out here in the countryside. A radio set for farm use, made before 1930, would usually be battery operated. Before 1927, all radios were battery operated. When my dad was a child on the farm, his dad parked the car near a window and ran wires into the radio, to use the car's battery. Those radios also required two more types of batteries to power the vacuum tubes. Additionally, my dad's family strung a long wire out to a tree branch to serve as an antenna. There were few radio stations at that time, so sensitivity was important. The early radios were very sensitive, and with the lack of computers and other electrical background noise, a radio station several hundred miles away could be heard.
