Hi, I ate with a friend of my brother’s tonight by the name of Fatland. I’ve know his father and grandfather all my life, and never had a clue that his family is Norwegian. I told him I would put out a question to the group to see if anyone can give him any hints about where his ancestors came from or whether there are any Fatlands still in Norway. His understanding is the his great-great-grandfather came from Noway to MN and then lived in IA before they came to SD. Thanks! Steve, My grandfather's sister married a Fatland, who was an immigrant from Norway. I have his immigrant record, which I got through Ancestry, but it's incomplete. It has the parish, but not the county. I have the Fatland name back to Peter Hansen Lilieinskiold Fatland, 1784-1863, born and died in Norway. Not much help! One of his sons, Hans Anderson (Kjeka) Fatland, born in Norway in 1824, married twice. The first time was to an Oline Abrahamsdattar, in 1842; she died in 1844, after giving birth to a daughter Oline. He remarried in Fjelberg Parish,,Norway, 1849 to Dorothea Marie Pettersdatter Lilieinskiold, b. 1827 in Norway, d. 1909 in Norway. Unfortunately, the adjacent commas mean I do NOT know the county/flyke the couple were married in. And all this information comes from Ancestry family trees. The repetition of the name Lilienskold seems significant, but I'm not sure how. It would indicate, maybe, that Peter maybe married a neice? Or at least if that's a farm name, perhaps both he and his second wife lived on the same farm. What I have that is a more firm information comes from a passenger list on Ancestry. In 1875, Hans and Dorothea Fatland and a long string of children emigrated from Norway. I don't remember the port they left from, but they were in Liverpool on their way to America. There Hans died--he was not a young man. Dorothea and the children went on, though eventually she returned to Norway, dying there in 1909. Ten Fatland children were b. between 1849 and 1870, so some were still small when they emigrated. Some ended up in ND. One of the younger ones was Ole H. Fatland, b. 1865 in Fjelberg,,Norway--note that again I don't know the county in Norway, but it's the same parish as where his parents were married long before. He married Bertha Harrison. While her name sounds English, she had originally been Birgitte Henriksen, b. 1879 in Sandefjord, Vestfold, Norway, emigrated with her family in 1890. Bertha was sister to my maternal grandfather. I have no memory of ever meeting her, however. Ole and Bertha were married 1905 in Breckenridge, Wilkin, MN, and lived in the upper NW counties of ND all their married lives. He was a farmer and preacher. His siblings lived mostly in ND, a few in MN. One interesting story about Bertha and 3 of their 4 daughters (they had no sons) is that during WW II, while the daughters were young and unmarried, and times were bad in ND, Bertha and the three girls came to Seattle, where there was lots of war work. Boeing hired women to build airplanes, and other companies were making parts for the planes. My grandparents' 5 kids were grown and gone, so the Fatland women lived with them while they were being "Rosie the Riveters." One of them liked the area so much that she stayed for several years after the war, working as a teacher. Given the earlier ancestors who died in Norway, I'm sure there are still Fatlands there. I know there are ways to search DigitalArkives with the name of a parish to find out what counties have parishes with that name. I don't know how to do it, but I know that other listers will be able to help you. Hope this helps.
