    3. I did some searching in the USA since Fatland didn't seem a very common name to me... Ancestry 1940 census for Waubay, Day, SD has: Hanna Scotness, Head, 63, b. NO, widowed and living with... Engsbord (Looks more like Engabord) Flatness, Mother, 87, Widowed, b. NO Then 1940 for Chamberlain, Brule, SD Elsie (transcribed Elrie) Flatland, Head, F, 60 widowed, b. Iowa Guy Flatland, Son, 22, married, b. Iowa Mary Jane Flatladn, daughter-in-law, 20, b. SD Then in Washington, Story, Iowa in the home of Andrew K Johnson, 76, b. NO Steward Fatland, Nephew, 58, widowed, b. Iowa (The above's residence at 1 Apr 1940 was Hot Springs, Fall River, SD) So this seems like the people - Now to try to trace them back a few decades... Some more information about the grandparents would help! Lisbeth

    3. Cliff!, Guy and Mary Fatland are this young man's grandparents. Chamberlain, SD is our county seat, 18 miles from here. Hot Springs, SD is in the Black Hills of South Dakota not far from the Wyoming border. One possibility with Hot Springs is that it is the location of the regional Veterans Hospital and nursing home. I suppose it is possible that this Steward could have been a veteran of WWI, but he would have been 36 in 1918, which I suppose is pretty old for being drafted. Now, I have to try to remember, because as a child, I knew Mary's brother was a customer in my grandfather's store in Kimball. Paul Sebesta, I think. I tried last night to reach out to Guy and Mary's daughter who now lives on the West coast, I believe in Seattle, via Facebook, but it's only 8 in the morning there, so she probably hasn't been on her computer yet. In any case, you definetly have the right line with Guy and Mary. Thanks! 3. Steve, Depending on their family situations, some 36 year olds did get drafted in WW I. They certainly filled out draft cards, so you can search for that if nothing else. The records of the Veterans' home should be available too.
