    3. None of the historic Deuel County newspapers are online, so you’ll need to look at the microfilms. Your best bet would probably be the “Clear Lake Courier”. Believe it or not I actually own a Diazo copy that covers 28 April 1910 through 20 Feb 1913. I’m not seeing anything about her though. Astoria, Fish Lake, Brandt, Toronto, Norden, Gary, Altamont and other towns all had regular coverage. I’m surprised I didn’t see anything. It’s a great paper. Absolutely full of local happenings, gossip, news about former residents who have moved out of the area. In the 5 May 1910 edition, Norden local happenings mentions that; “Melia Jensen visited her sister, Mrs. Carl Iverson over Sunday.” The 19 May 1910 edition, Local news for Gary mentions that; “Jesse Jensen has been visiting his parents and friends here a week or more, left Thursday by way of Aberdeen for his new location in a lumber yard in the northwestern part of North Dakota.” I see a young Lillie Jensen getting married in the 28 July edition. She seems to be the daughter of C. B. Jensen, but there is no mention of a death, so she wouldn’t be related. Would there be another name she went by? 4 Aug 1910 article: “Five deaths, eleven births and one divorce were recorded in the office of the clerk of courts for the 31 days of July.” Seems like it should be easy to find something if she was one of only 5 deaths. -Mark

    3. Dear Mark and other Listers! Thank you very much, Mark, for commenting on my inquiry about Synneva Jenson (Hillestad) from Astoria, SD. I am surprised you found no mention of her in the local paper. She lived with her widowed daughter Christie, Mrs. Peter Olson (Walager) on a farm in Scandinavia township, Deuel Co., SD, and they are all buried in the Wood Lake cemetery! Whether Synneva had other names? She was born as Synneva Torstensdotter Quam and had been married to Knut Jensson Quam or Hillestad who died in Norway in 1862. I guess the only alternative names I can think of, would be Quam or Knutson... Thanks again, Mark, for looking! Very sincerely yours, Lars E.
