Dear Kay and other Listers! Thanks a million, Kay, for solving this big problem of mine! So, Charles died while visiting Norway, and my next step will be trying to figure out where in Norway he died. I suppose Bergen is the most likely place, but we just don't know... In the meantime I have also found the explanations of the seaman titles of his. Apparently he ended up as a captain (master)! Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. He obviously started out as a "mate", then I see in 1934 he is referred to as a "chief offer", and from about 1940 he was a "master". The last time I find him as such is in 1953, when he sailed to Bremerhaven in Germany. Only in a newspaper clipping from 1946 he is referred to as a "skipper" sailing from Mexico to San Francisco, CA. Can anyone help me, please, to explain these seaman titles of Charles'? > > The very last entry on ancestry.com is from 1954 when he was on a flight by SAS from Oslo to New York! > > We know Charles was dead by 1968 (when a sister of his died in Bergen, Norway), as he was then survived by children Karl, Gerd and Borre, but so far I have been unable to find an exact date (and place) of his death!
