    3. Lena and Hilda were having dinner together one night. When it came time for dessert, Lena took the largest piece of cake. Hilda looked very surprised and said, "Vell, Lena, dat sure vasn't very polite of yew! Yew took da biggest piece of cake." "Vell, vhat vould yew have done?" asked Lena. "Vell, I vould have been polite and taken da smaller vun!" replied Hilda. "Vell, vhat are yew griping (klager?) about?" Lena asked with a smile. "Yew have it." 3. Reminds me of how my Norwegian mother solved this problem when we were kids. The house rule was "I cut, you choose." That way the kid who cut the cake or pie had an incentive to make the pieces as equal as possible. Otherwise, they were bound to end up with the smallest one, because they could count on one of their siblings to choose the biggest one. It worked, too! Since there were three kids, we all learned how to cut things into five equal pieces, which is quite a trick.
