The house rule was "I cut, you choose." That way the kid who cut the cake or pie had an incentive to make the pieces as equal as possible. Otherwise, they were bound to end up with the smallest one, because they could count on one of their siblings to choose the biggest one. It worked, too! Since there were three kids, we all learned how to cut things into five equal pieces, which is quite a trick.
