Dear Listers! This is a problem that has bothered me for at least 25 years. Maybe now has the time come to find the answer? ~~~~~~~~~~ Charles J(ames?) SHAW son of Daniel SHAW and Catherine TOOLE born about 1855 in Ottawa. ON probably lived 1881 in Yale & Hope, BC (railroad fireman) married Mar. 6, 1888 at Helena, MT Karen Kirstine aka Christine (Einersdotter) OVERBOE daughter of Einar OVERBOE and Margaret HILLESTAD born June 2, 1865 in Hafslo parish, Luster Co., Norway emigrated in 1876 marriage witnesses: George N. Southworth and Ena Stanley Charles SHAW was 1888 a bartender at Helena, MT, supposedly moved a few years later to Wallace, ID - then disappeared! Karen Kirstine's parents died in Vernon Co., WI in 1919 (Margaret) and 1923 (Einer), and at the time of Einer Overboe's death we learn that Karen Kirstine had died - apparently prior to 1918(?) - leaving two children: 1. Margaret SHAW 2. Donald SHAW These children were searched for by the Vernon Co., WI probate court, but they were never found! ~~~~~~~~~~ Is it possible today, 90 years later, to figure out what happened to Karen Kirstine "Christine", Charles and their children? Could there be newspaper notices telling about them? Any suggestions would be more than welcome, and I would be for ever indebted to anyone who reveals their destiny! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
Lars, Not to be too discouraging, but in the 1880s, all those places--Helena MT, Wallace ID, and Yale and Hope BC, were very much frontier towns. Helena and Wallace were mining towns until the mid 20th c. and may have had newspapers but it's doubtful they kept vital records. I had a friend who lived in Hope BC in the early 20th c. and even then it was a wide spot in the road so probably didn't even have a newspaper. Even in 2000, Helena had a population of 26,000; Wallace, 960; Hope, 6,200; and Yale,171. These numbers are from my Rand McNally Road Atlas, from the 2000 census. Helena's clearly your best bet by far for finding a newspaper record of their marriage. If he was a bartender--an important occupation in a mining town--their marriage might show up in the newspaper. We all long sometimes for the 1890 census, and this is one of those times. Do you have any idea of the birth years of Margaret and Donald Shaw, and where they were born? That might help find them prior to 1918. Good luck! Doris On Tue, May 26, 2015 at 4:47 PM, Lars E.
