I have a reference to Peder Magnus Berg Pedersen (in Canada, Peter Magnus Berg) emigrating to Amerika in 1900. He is the son of Peder Martin Knudsen and Maren Kirstine Eriksdatter and born 22 September 1884 in Flakstad Prgld. I can find him emigrating from Oslo 25 May 1907, but not the first time. Any suggestions on locating this piece of information? I have tried the Emigration from Trondheim. Thanks. Earl
Earl, Barbara's suggestion made me think about NorwayHeritage.com which is a free website full of extremely useful information for finding emigration data. It has articles and photos on what it was like to come steerage, as virtually all our ancestors did, at whatever period. He divides the search section into two time periods, and you can specify line if you know it. I found one very early set of ancestors here, including the image, of their leaving Norway. The name was spelled slightly wrong in the transcript, but the image was very clearly my family. There are also images of many of the ships. Also some ports, like Liverpool, a likely first stop for people coming from Trondheim, will show for a given line, day by day, which ships left, for which US port. For another of my families, I was able to narrow down which of two Cunard ships they left on, and which US ports those ships went to. One went to NY, the other to Boston. At the time I found that, Ancestry didn't have the data up yet, but within a short time, someone found them for me, landing in Boston. So if you haven't tried this wonderful site, I'd take a look. There's a section on people going to Canada, which didn't apply to my families, though maybe I *should* look there for the two great grandfathers I still can't find! Hope this helps. Hi Earl, Do you know which shipping line he took in 1907? He may have made passage on the same line. THey could perhaps give you passenger lists of their ships for the years in question. Or you could check the passenger lists on Cyndy's List. What is the reference that suggests Peter went to America in 1900, Earl? If Peter was born 22 Sep 1884 he would have been only 16 in 1900. So where would he have been going in 1900? Was there family in Canada or the US? His Ellis Island record 10 Jun 1907 on the SS Caledonia says he has not been in the USA before. His destination is the Norwegian Sailor's Home in New York.
