I am having difficulty translating a word from a Digitalarkivet 1910 census record. The online dictionaries and Google Translate have not been any help. The word I need translated is: husbestyrerinde. Can someone on the list also recommend a good Norwegian to English dictionary. Thanks, Linda
Dear Linda, I am unable to suggest any particular translation program, but "husbestyrerinde" is a woman managing the household. She might be leading a staff of house employees. Hope this helps! Two I use and have goodly amount of success : Haugen, Einar. Norwegian English Dictionary (Norsk Engelsk Ordbok), Universitetsforlate / University of Wisconsin Press, 1965, 1974 for general dictionary translation. He also gives examples of usage. Put the following genealogy dictionary on your "Favorites" bar : Otto Jørgensen's Norwegian-American Dictionary (http://home.online.no/~otjoerge/files/word.htm) For the Census, I found "Census abbreviations used in the on-line 1865-1900 Census Records" at http://draug.rhd.isv.uit.no/histform/appendix.htm When really stumped, search through the Rootsweb lists - many terms have already been defined and posted. Or, the members of this group are Wonderful! at translations. Earl On 01/04/2015 9:24 AM, L Lodgaard via wrote: > I am having difficulty translating a word from a Digitalarkivet 1910 census record. Oh, yes, - - using Google translate - - many words can be found by switching from "Norwegian to English" to "Danish to English" Note the discussion on housekeeper now in progress - it's a warning that while we may be able to translate, we sometimes miss the meaning because we "foreigners" don't know the context of the language, the place (especially dialects), time (words changed over time), and usage.
