Lars, The Green Giant Co. is one of the largest buyers of produce in the US, which they then can and freeze for commercial resale. Think green peas, green beans, corn, that kind of vegetables. They are headquartered in Le Sueur. "Research and Development" is that part of a corporation that works on developing new products. One major kind of new product in this case would be recipes that use their vegetables, both canned and frozen, these days. Thune, as a supervisor, wouldn't have been the top person in this department (that would have been the director), but would have been pretty high up in R & D, as it's called. Most large corporations have this kind of department. Green Giant is now part of General Mills, a huge food conglomerate. The Green Giant brand is still used, and their "mascot" used for advertising is "The Jolly Green Giant." A 55 foot fiberglass statue of The Jolly Green Giant attracts tourists at Blue Earth, MN, and is the centerpiece of their annual festival. Thanks to Wikipedia for this info! Dear Marian, Doris and other listers! Thanks a million for your great comments in regard to Harold Thune's job. Now I can better imagine what he did for a job! Now I hope that someone can also help me find his widow's obituary... Thanks again! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. I like the Green Giant towering above the trees as I drive down the big hill into the river valley. I’ve driven by that landmark hundreds of times (in more years than I care to admit).
