I don't know how things work in MN, but here in SD, the State Historical Society is scanning old photos, etc. and the public is able to search for historical pictures. A week or so ago, a cousin of mine from OR found a postcard of the pioneer church here that our ancestors attended starting around 1900. The picture was a postcard made in 1910. For $10 I was able to get a high resolution jpeg file within half an hour of talking to the man in charge of documnts. The picture is now on the front page of our online family history book.
