    3. http://vesterheim.org/collections/civil-war-database/ The Vesterheim Museum Civil War database has the following: http://vesterheim.org/collections/civil-war-database/l/lud/ LUDVICKSON, Christian WI 3rd Inf Co D. Born in Norway. Civil War: Farmer. Age 40. Blue eyes, sandy hair, fair complexion, 5’ 8”. Enlisted for two years on 23 Aug 1864 at Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, as a substitute for John Lee of Linden, Iowa County, Wisconsin. Mustered the same day. Private. Joined the Company 1 Oct 1864. Died of disease 22 Jan 1865 at Madison, Wisconsin. Sources: (WHS Series 1200 boxes 12-2,19; red book vol 9 p 86) (WLCW p16) (Love p1061) “Ludwigson, Christian” I do not know the sources listed or how accurate they are, but if there are any Civil War historians on the list, they might be able to tell you. Below that info are two other men with similar names, different spellings, who should be able to be eliminated from consideration as "your" Christen Nitter Ludvigson Elvethun. If Christian/Christen died "of disease" in Madison, WI, there may be a chance that the Dane County, WI courthouse in Madison would have a death record for him - and hopefully there would be a more definitive cause of death than "of disease." I'm not an expert in Wisconsin research, so I'm not sure what's available for WI death records online. Beste, Bev ----- Original Message ----- From: Lars E. Dear Listers! Do we have any experts on the Civil War among the listers? I have this problem: Christen Nitter Ludvigson Elvethun, born in Hafslo, Norway Oct. 11, 1822, was supposed to take over the home farm, but then he changed his mind and emigrated in 1860, presumably to Spring Prairie, Dane/Columbia Co., WI. The Nitter Family History Book says about him that he enlisted in the Civil War from Wisconsin, but he was killed in action in the Battle of Chickamauga, GA in Sep. of 1863. Then I have another source saying that Christen aka Christian Ludwigson enlisted in 1864, and that he died "of disease" at Madison, IN on Jan. 22, 1865. Can anyone tell me what REALLY happened to "my" Christen Nitter Ludvigson Elvethun? Thank a million in advance for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

    3. Dear Bev, Arne and other Listers! Thank you very much, Bev and Arne, for very interesting messages. I must say, "my" Christen looks very similar to the one described on the Vesterheim site, both agewise and otherwise. However, when the author of the Nitter book says he was killed at Chickamauga, GA, he must have a source for that information!? Could there have been a man with a similar name among the victims at Chickamauga at all? Maybe some Civil War "expert" can confirm, or disconfirm, this? Another question is this: While Vesterheim refers to him dying in Madison, WI, the American Civil War Research Dsatabase referred to by Arne gives Madison, IN as the place of death. Now, Madison, IN is the County Seat of Jefferson Co., IN in the very southeast corner of that state. Maybe Christian had arrived there escaping from battles across the river in Kentucky? An interesting piece of history... Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E.
