    3. Cliff et al. I agree, Fatland's not a common name. Going back far enough, they may all be related, unlike my Norwegian Johnsons. Looks to me like the only person in either of your emails who is old enough to be of the immigrant generation is Engaborg Fatland, 87, in the 1940 census. The problem is that you have her last name as Flatness, not the same as Fatland. Did you mean to type Fatland? One of Hans and Dorothea's sons, Peter, was married to an Ingeborg, among his three wives, but divorced her. I have, however, that she died in 1923, in Clay Co. MN. And I don't know which of Peter's children came from which wife, as I don't know when he married which one, and when the divorce and death of the others came. Since the Fatlands were in-laws of my great aunt, I did not trace them very far, I admit. I last researched them in 2011, and the 1940 census wasn't available then. But I don't think the descendants you've found are related to "my" Fatlands. Hans and Dorothea had sons Peter (1850-1919) Andrew (1852-1877) Hans (1855-1925) Evan (1860-1931) John (1862-1939) *Ole (1865-1936) m Bertha Harrison, my g aunt Amund (1870-1877) Only Peter, Hans, Evan, John, and Ole married and could have left US descendants. Ole had four girls. All of them married brothers named Halden; I don't know much about them, but I presume they were Norwegian, or at least Scandinavian. That part of ND was heavily Scandinavian in the 1930s and 1940s, when these marriages took place. At any rate, the Fatland name disappeared in this branch of the family. 3. Doing a quick check of the 1865 census in Norway, I find places called Fatland in at least 8 different parishes.  Not necessarily a common place name, but not unique either. Greg Holter

    3. Greg, With the family names, someone has found this particular family. It is good to know that they are not unique, which means that other Fatland families lived in Norway to emigrate later. So Steve's friend named Fatland is probably not directly related to my great aunt's husband. Thanks for checking that 1865 census!
