Back in the day, this was a very big country. If you and your wife had a major argument, you could leave her and go elsewhere, tell people your name was something else and marry again without any fuss made. It happened in my family and if he hadn't contacted his family to tell them where he was, his first wife wouldn't ever have found out that she needed to divorce him. As it was, she was married three times. Once to him, once to the second husband, who died, and another time to the third husband. Now, you couldn't get away with that.
