I don't have the obituaries, but Charles C. Berck was my great grandmother's brother so I do have information on him. He was born Johann Conrad Carl Berck in Erzhausen, Hesse Darmstadt/Germany, 11 Jan 1866, during a three-year time when his parents Johannes "John" Berck and Catharina Elizabeth Seibold returned to Germany. He was the only one of their children to be born in Germany, though he was the 6th of 10. John and Elizabeth were from Erzhausen but had gone to the U.S. separately in the 1850's and married there, in Chicago in 1855. They returned to Germany at the request of John's mother about 1864 or 1865 and Charles was born while they were there. They returned to the U.S. when Charles was a baby and lived in Grand Rapids, La Salle Co., Illinois until 1881 when they moved to Howard County. Charles and Susan Hunt married in Chicago 22 July 1890 In 1910 they must have been living in Hardy, Nebraska (Nuckolls County) because their daughter Gladys was born there - here is her obituary. and they moved to Dannebrog in about 1913. It also gives Charles and Susan's children's names - five boys and two girls, all deceased before 1999. Area deaths Gladys Jensen LOUP CITY- Gladys M. Dear Lenise and other Listers! Thank you very very much, Lenise, for your wonderful message about the Berck family! Charles Berck's birth has indeed been a rather "confusing" topic, various census records gives his birth in Darmstadt/Hessen, Germany with emigration year 1867, on the Atlantic ocean or even in Illinois, so I didn't quite know what to believe! Thank you, Lenise, for clearing this up for me! My interest in this family comes thru Susan (Karen Susanna) Berck, nee Hunt, whose mother Anna Marie "Mary" Ludwigson Hunt emigrated from Luster Co., Norway in 1856. In my biography work I try to give a more-or-less complete description of all emigrants as well as of their children, the first generation born in the US, including spouses. Tracing all descendants of all 6,500 emigrants from Luster Co., Norway would mean tracing more than 300,000 individuals in the US (and other places), and that's a task I would never be able to complete, but for our County files I also include information about later generations, so you are welcome to send me what you have, maybe off-list to lars.e.oyane@sdsl.no? Thanks again, Lenise, for writing. Gladys Jensen's obituary gives a good view of the family life after 1910, but I would still love to see Charles and Susan's obituaries, so if you can manage to obtain those, I would be very grateful!
