    1. [NOR] James and Ethel Sturgell of Fairbanks, AK and Albuquerque, NM - further info available?
    2. Lars E. Oyane
    3. Dear Listers! I have for some time been «hunting» information about this couple: James Cavanaugh Sturgell, born in Boyd Co., KY Aug. 31, 1873 Ethel Ada Sturgell, nee Larson or Lawson, born in Dane Co., WI July of 1871 James went to Alaska as a carpenter and a bridge builder in 1897, and Ethel apparently arrived there shortly after 1900. They were married at Fairbanks, AK Oct. 20, 1917. Census records from Fairbanks, AK show that Ethel systematically pretended being 12/15 years younger than she really was, for whatever reason…, but we know for sure she is the one we want to find! Some time in the 1940’s the couple retired to Albuquerque, NM where I understand they both died, James in 1957, and Ethel in 1959. They had an adopted daughter who had them buried in the Sunset Memorial Park cemetery in Minneapolis, MN, but their headstones have no exact dates! I am particularly interested in finding further details regarding their deaths! Maybe obituaries can be researched in Albuquerque, NM, or even in Fairbanks, AK? Thanks a million in advance for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

    3. Dear Sarah, Sherrie and other listers! Thank you very much for your quick replies to my inquiry about the Sturgells! I am amazed and quite happy with your findings! Two small questions though: * While the headstone in the Sunset Memorial Park cemetery shows Ethel died in 1959, and her obituary seems to have appeared in the Alamogordo Daily News from Aug. 4, 1959, the text over shows she died July 22, 1958. I suspect 1958 to be a «typo», but wanted to make sure…? * The only detail now missing about this couple is the exact date of birth for Ethel in Madison, WI in July of 1871. Her obituary didn’t give a date, did it? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter and for making the NORWAY list to one of the greatest lists ever! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. 3. Here’s a few articles: ___________________ Alamogordo Daily News Sunday, June 9, 1957, Alamogordo, New Mexico Alamogordo Carrousel Talk about doing a lot of things in a short time, Mrs. Eileen Hutchinson probably holds the record for such feats. This is what happened: About a month ago she received word that her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James C. Sturgell, pioneer residents of Fairbanks, Alaska, were ill. She got leave from her job with the General Plant Protection Co. at Holloman, and took out. Via plane, she soon arrived in Fairbanks. There she discovered that her parents would have to come to the States for medical care. Their Fairbanks home must be sold. Within a few days, she had sold the property, taken care of the disposal of the furniture. Then began the trip back home with her two ill parents. Her father had to travel in a wheel chair, and this made it difficult to get plane passage, but Mrs Hutchinson being a woman of no few talents, she got this difficulty ironed out. They first stopped at Seattle, then came on down the west coastline to Los Angeles. At last they landed at El Paso Mr Sturgell was placed in a rest home in Las Cruces. Mrs. Sturgell came on home with her daughter, and now is receiving medical treatment here. Mrs Hutchinson accomplished all of this within a month, and now is back at her job working away like a beaver, as usual. ___________________ Alamogordo Daily News Tuesday, July 9, 1957, Alamogordo, New Mexico Alamogordo Carrousel Mrs. Eileen Hutchinson’s father, James C. Sturgell, died recently at a nursing home in Las Cruces. He was 85 and a pioneer resident of Alaska. Only recently, Mrs. Hutchinson had flown to Alaska to bring her parents back to New Mexico with her. Upon arrival, Mr. Sturgell’s critical condition made it necessary to place him in the nursing home. Eileen and Mrs. Sturgell flew to Minneapolis, where Mr. Sturgell’s body was sent for funeral services and burial. Mrs. Sturgell plans to spend the remainder of the summer there with friends. Mrs. Hutchinson flew home after the services, and again is working away on her job with General Plant Protection Co. at Holloman AFB . ___________________ Alamogordo Daily News Sunday, July 26, 1959, Alamogordo, New Mexico Autumn Nuptial Plans Revealed Mrs. Ethel Sturgell is announcing the forthcoming early autumn marriage of her daughter, Eileen Hutchinson, to Capt. Eli Lackland Beeding. Both Mrs. Sturgell and her daughter, a native Alaskan, have been residents of Alamogordo for the past three years. The bride-to-be was educated at the University of Alaska and Barnard College, Columbia University, New York City, N.Y. Capt. Beeding is a native of San Antonio, Tex.; he is a graduate of Baylor University at Waco, Tex. And has done one year work toward his master’s degree in physiology at the University of Michigan. For the past three years he has been assigned to the biodynamics branch of the Aero Medical Field Laboratory, Holloman Research and Development Center, as a task scientist for studies on human tolerance to abrupt deceleration. ___________________ Alamogordo Daily News Tuesday, August 4, 1959, Alamogordo, New Mexico Sturgell Rites Conducted In Minneapolis Mrs. Eileen Hutchinson and daughter, Cecily Denise, have returned from Minneapolis, where they attended private family services for Mrs. Hutchinson's mother, Mrs. Ethel Sturgell, who died here July 22 after an Alamogordo residence of about eight months. Rites were held at the Washburn-McCreavy Mortuary in Minneapolis, with interment in Sunset Memorial Park beside her late husband, James C. Sturgell, whom she met and married in Alaska many years ago. The Sturgells lived in Alaska for 40 years, and it was a point of pride with Mrs. Sturgell that her adopted home became the largest of the United States before her death. Born in Madison, Wisc., the daughter of Lewis and Elizabeth Larson. Mrs Sturgell had journeyed to Alaska as a tourist when she met and married her husband. She had resided with a sister in Minneapolis following her husband’s death until coming to live in Alamogordo. Mrs Sturgell remained active until her death and was interested in current topics and was a prime favorite with residents of the community. especially the children of the vicinity of the Hutchinson home, who all knew her as “Grandma.” Survivors include the daughter and granddaughter here; two sisters. Mrs Katherine Kenyon and Mrs. Harry Myers, and numerous nephews and nieces, all living in the Midwest. ___________________

    3. Dear Mark and other Listers! Thank you so very much, Mark, for this great message which I have just received in regard to Ethel and James Sturgell! I am amazed and very happy indeed! At this point, all I would like to add to my biography on Ethel, would be her exact birthdate. She was born in July of 1871 in or near Madison, Dane Co., WI, but neither her nor any of her seven siblings’ baptismal records can be found in any Norwegian Lutheran churches in or around Madison, WI, although I did read somewhere they had been going to a Norwegian Lutheran church! Maybe they rather went to an English Lutheran church, if that can be found in the area of Windsor township? Thanks again for your wonderful assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E.
