The marriage record say Brithe was born 31 Dec 1836 (I understand now your original request was saying she was born 31 Dec 1835. The birth date matches your 7 February 1826 with a baptismal date of 16 February. https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__media.digitalarkivet.no_view_11625_7&d=DwIFAg&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=wKgXGfJAsND_fyEr0dXdmBAoxb3zAFC1NuSC_p5Q23A&m=FxGghz1r1ouzkUgzG64XjjREcy8jexqzVcdN28w5lOs&s=5bxy36OJCP-MYrSgeE_z3335mPVWI1_XfjhELZRqbv4&e= Edward A. Dear Mark, Bev, Jennifer and other Listers! Thank you very much for your great messages in regard to my question about free death certificates from Oregon. It sounds like we depend on someone who can personally visit the Oregon State Historical Society, and I only regret I am just too far away myself to be able to do that! But I appreciate very much, Mark, that you sent me the newspaper clippings about the Heggelunds. They did give me some interest information after all! What I was hoping in particular from Edward Heggelund’s obituary was information regarding a «prominent» brother of his, Menotti Garibaldi Heggelund, also known as «Baldy Heggelund». He was born in Story City, IA Jan. 18, 1868 and shows up on Manhattan, NY where he married on May 1, 1926 a 73 year old lady, presumably a widow, named Johanna or «Annie» Wright. However, she died in Richmond Co., NY already on July 10, 1929, leaving «Baldy» widowed. Now, I have been informed that «Baldy» was quite a good musician handling the cornet like few others in those days, and I was wondering, maybe articles can be found about him and his life? As far as the Heggelund name is concerned, it has no connection to the many similar farm names from the Agder area of Southern Norway, like Hegland, Heglund and others, although we know the «Yankees» didn’t always get the spelling right when taking up census records etc… For your information, this Heggelund family has a completely different origin, quoting a History of McPherson Co., KS dating from about 1884: ~~~~~ O. HEGGELUND came to Lindsborg, Kansas, in 1874, where he engaged in merchandising for about two years. He then moved to McPherson, where he followed the same business for about five years, the last two years under the name of O. Heggelund & Son. He then retired and afterwards devoted his attention to banking, being a charter member of the Bank of Lindsborg as well as the Farmers' and Merchants' Bank of McPherson, Kan., both being State banks, representing each a capital of $50,000. He is at present the president of both banks. He was born in Norway, in 1831, was married in 1858, to Miss Anna Dahl. They have three children. C. August is assistant cashier in the Farmers' and Merchants' Bank of McPherson; Edward C. now attending the Commercial College (Gem City) of Quincy, Ill.; Menotti Garibaldi, attending McPherson High School. Mr. Heggelund came to America in 1864 and located in Chicago, Ill., where he lived for about two years and became owner of a vessel sailing on the lake. He then moved to Story City, Iowa, and engaged in merchandising for about seven years. In 1873 he closed out his business, made a visit to his native country for about a year, came direct from Norway to Kansas. He is a member of the Masonic order. ~~~~~ Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. 3. Oregon DC can be viewed at the State Archives for free, you can scan them yourself (if you have your own scanner) or 25 cents per copy. As far as I know they are not available online and I haven't heard any rumors that they are planning to make them available online. I don't live close enough to get there regularly anymore, but am sure there are folks who do. They will be available thru the 1967 timeframe or so. Jennifer -----Original Message----- 1. For Lars' queries, I will suggest alternate American spellings for Heggelund: Heglund or Hegland. The latter spelling was used in northwestern Minnesota in the 1960s and earlier when I went to high school with someone with the Hegland spelling. 1. [NOR] Philosopher's hut deep in the fjord: Wittgenstein in Norway - YouTube

    3. I found this video rather engaging because it does not have frenetic background "music" to distract from the natural sounds and scenery shown in the video.  I hope you enjoy it, too. Beste, Bev YouTube info: Philosopher's hut deep in the fjord: Wittgenstein in Norway [Published on YouTube 10 April 2016] https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.youtube.com_watch-3Fv-3DolLIUUL3Bek&d=DwIDaQ&c=kKqjBR9KKWaWpMhASkPbOg&r=wKgXGfJAsND_fyEr0dXdmBAoxb3zAFC1NuSC_p5Q23A&m=I9Vsy2rVsxcb7dsFPQbPjjV9oyVhusO1z2jt3sshk3U&s=jKBwDw7Zt81L4DBtKftNM0LS2XOCe3jExfCuZlF9reE&e= Over 100 years ago, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein went to the fjords of Norway to escape the scholarly world of Cambridge. His former teacher Bertrand Russell wrote, “I said it would be lonely, and he said he prostituted his mind talking to intelligent people.” Not content with simply moving to the isolation of rural Norway - at the end of the Sognefjord (the deepest and second longest fjord) - Wittgenstein built his hut across the lake and halfway up a mountain from the nearest town (Skjolden). Measuring just 7 by 8 meters, the small cabin dubbed “Little Austria” (his native country) became his home on and off throughout his life (his longest stay here was 13 months). Today all that remains of his hut are its stone foundation and a very faint hikers trail up the mountain, though some Norwegians are trying to change this. Artists Marianne Bredesen, Sebastian Makonnen Kjølaas and Siri Hjorth (in collaborations with the Wittgenstein Society in Skjolden and funded by Public Art Norway) threw an all-expenses-paid vacation to bring fellow Oslo residents to the ruin. Inspired by Wittgenstein’s argument that “philosophical problems arise when language goes on holiday,” they are calling their art holiday “Wittgenstein on Vacation.” For part one, they entertained their guests with a weekend of lectures, meals and a Wittgenstein interpretation at the site of his cabin. We captured some of the show on our own journey to this disappearing piece of history.
