Lars -- This seems to be the obit of Priscilla's sister. Dear Mark, Betty and other Listers! Thank you so very much, Mark, for finding and sending me that obituary for Mrs. Sovde from Medicine Hat, AB! It provided indeed answers to so many of my questions about that family, in particular referring to the daughter Mrs. Canniff of Minneapolis, MN. She is one person i have never been able to identify, and now I even found a reference to a first marriage of hers at Medicine Hat, AB in 1912: * Myrtle Agnes King married Wm James Stone in 1912, but the original marriage record will have to be ordered from the Alberta Provincial Archives. Maybe that’s something that you, Brian, if you read this, could help me obtain once visiting the Provincial Archives? Thanks again for your great assistance in this matter, and hopefully Clara Blakley’s obituary can also be found? And how are the chances to find those census records? The NORWAY list is such a wonderful place. What should we have done without it? Very sincerely yours, Lars E. I have found the marriage record of Sorine Halvorsdatter to Peder Henriksen at Lerberg Buskerud in 1852. Sorine,s father is shown as Halvor Syverson. Both Sorine and Peder are shown age 25. I can not find a birth record for her. Can anyone offer a suggestion? June at genealbug@gmail.com
Dear Listers! About 25 years ago I finally located the (at that time) 97 year old son of an emigrant from Luster Co., Norway living in Puyallup, WA. I knew that he was very knowledgable about his family, having travelled a lot and even working for many years as a real «cowboy» in Alberta! However, he was not at all communicative with me, so I just had to give him up… Now I have managed to find out a whole lot about the family without his assistance, but I am stuck on some points, and now I hope that some of you can help me, please: Erick Sovde, born in Norway Jan. 30, 1858, with his son Henry Sovde, born in McLeod, ND June 28, 1896 migrated in July of 1910 via North Portal, SK heading for Irvine, AB. My original information says that Erick settled at Cypress Hills near Walsh, AB, and that they lived there until Erick and the son in 1938 moved to Los Angeles, CA. I have not found an entry for the family in the 1911 census, but they show up in the 1916 census at Medicine Hat, AB, then surrounded by Erick's wife Mary J., in the census called Mildred, and a granddaughter Mildred, both of whom supposedly also emigrated in 1910. They are in Sub-District 05 described as Townships 7, 8 and 9 ranges 1 and 2, W. 4. M. ** Can someone please help me find this family in the 1911 Alberta census? Mary Josephine Sovde died Dec. 10, 1918, supposedly at Cypress Hills, AB(!), and she is buried in the Hillside cemetery at Medicine Hat, AB - compare find-a-grave: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/104067932 ** Can someone please help me find an obituary for Mary Josephine Sovde? ** I would also be interested in seeing what the family looked like in the 1921 and 1926 Alberta censuses… Next part concerns a stepdaughter of Erick Sovde’s, a daughter that Mary J. had from a previous marriage to Lewellyn King: Clara Bell King and her husband Adin Blakley are found in the 1911 Alberta census living at Medicine Hat in Township 7, Range 1 W 4, which must be close to Erick Sovde(!). They are said to have immigrated in 1910 as well with children Timothy, Ethel and Elsie! And in 1916 they have the same address as Erick Sovde, Sub-District 05 described as Townships 7, 8 and 9 ranges 1 and 2, W. 4. M., just one page before Erick! I have found a homestead record for Adin Blakley dated Sep. 3, 1910 describing his farm at Irvine, AB! Then I have been informed that Clara Blakley died at Stettler, AB in 1918, and this is her grave in the Lake View cemetery, Settler, Wainwright census division, AB (they must have moved between 1916 and 1918?): https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/123499936 ** Can someone please help me find an exact death date as well as an obituary for Clara Blakley? ** Is it possible to find the Adin Blakley family in the 1921 and 1926 Alberta censuses? Thanks a million in advance for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

Lars Having worked in the construction industry here in western Canada, “ironworkers’ are the trade that erects structural steel for buildings, bridges, etc. I believe that the same terminology is used throughout North America. 'Iron setter' may have been a predecessor term. 115 years ago, and up until the 1950s there were also riveters, but they were also part of the Ironworker’s trade. As the ability to work in elevated situations is common to both (sailing vessel) sailors and ironworkers, the transition from one to another seems likely. I doubt that Peter was an Irish Setter wha had been a sailor from Stavanger! I’ve known some clever dogs, but….
