Dear Lenise and other Listers! Thank you very very much, Lenise, for your wonderful message about the Berck family! Charles Berck's birth has indeed been a rather "confusing" topic, various census records gives his birth in Darmstadt/Hessen, Germany with emigration year 1867, on the Atlantic ocean or even in Illinois, so I didn't quite know what to believe! Thank you, Lenise, for clearing this up for me! My interest in this family comes thru Susan (Karen Susanna) Berck, nee Hunt, whose mother Anna Marie "Mary" Ludwigson Hunt emigrated from Luster Co., Norway in 1856. In my biography work I try to give a more-or-less complete description of all emigrants as well as of their children, the first generation born in the US, including spouses. Tracing all descendants of all 6,500 emigrants from Luster Co., Norway would mean tracing more than 300,000 individuals in the US (and other places), and that's a task I would never be able to complete, but for our County files I also include information about later generations, so you are welcome to send me what you have, maybe off-list to lars.e.oyane@sdsl.no? Thanks again, Lenise, for writing. Gladys Jensen's obituary gives a good view of the family life after 1910, but I would still love to see Charles and Susan's obituaries, so if you can manage to obtain those, I would be very grateful! Dear Listers! Yesterday I learned from the Ft. Dodge, IA public library that the library has gone online with a number of old newspapers for free use to research, including the Northwest Chronice (http://fortdodge.advantage-preservation.com/), so I was able to find these newspaper items myself! Now, I was very surprised to read the notices. How the index has been made, I don't quite understand. The first item from 1885 appeared to be a one-liner about Ole Lewis of Badger, IA having "again" become a grass widower! The ones from 1886 was about the same Ole Lewis having fallen and broken one of his legs at two spots. The follow-up notice told about Ole being "intoxicated" jumping out of his bed making the injury even worse, causing a risk for his leg as well as for his life(!). It's sometimes great entertainment reading those old newspapers, in my opinion a thousand times better than watching today's "TV-shows"!! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Dear Mark and other Listers! After the great success in finding so much information about Civil War soldier Christen Ludwigson, I am hoping for some similar success finding newspaper notices on Christen's sister Anna Marie "Mary" Ludwigson HUNT, George Hunt's 2nd wife. Dear Mark, Greg, Bev, Annette and other Listers! I am fascinated at all the wonderful information you have found about Christen Ludwigson, and in particular did I enjoy Mark's complete report from the Madison State Journal! I am in fact highly impressed how well the Civil War must have been documented in the only news carriers from back then, the newspapers. I guess we may conclude that "our" Christen Ludwigson was never at Chickamauga, so where they got that information, remains an enigma... And that he enlisted from Dodgeville, WI is a perfect "match", since he very likely emigrated to his uncle Christen Nelson at Dodgeville, WI, where his sister and brother already lived in 1860! By the way, I should add that another Christen Ludvickson enlisted in the Civil War from Minnesota. This "other" Christen (1841-1926) was in fact a cousin of Christen Ludwigson, emigrating in 1861 from the Heltne farm in Luster to Goodhue Co., MN, later settling on a farm in Greenwood Co., KS! Thanks again to all of you for helping me finally solve this Christen Ludwigson "enigma"! Now I continue "hunting" for his brother Henrik (Henry)... Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Hei, Earl. This is the source information you need to share. I don't have the obituaries, but Charles C. Berck was my great grandmother's brother so I do have information on him. He was born Johann Conrad Carl Berck in Erzhausen, Hesse Darmstadt/Germany, 11 Jan 1866, during a three-year time when his parents Johannes "John" Berck and Catharina Elizabeth Seibold returned to Germany. He was the only one of their children to be born in Germany, though he was the 6th of 10. John and Elizabeth were from Erzhausen but had gone to the U.S. separately in the 1850's and married there, in Chicago in 1855. They returned to Germany at the request of John's mother about 1864 or 1865 and Charles was born while they were there. They returned to the U.S. when Charles was a baby and lived in Grand Rapids, La Salle Co., Illinois until 1881 when they moved to Howard County. Charles and Susan Hunt married in Chicago 22 July 1890 In 1910 they must have been living in Hardy, Nebraska (Nuckolls County) because their daughter Gladys was born there - here is her obituary. and they moved to Dannebrog in about 1913. It also gives Charles and Susan's children's names - five boys and two girls, all deceased before 1999. Area deaths Gladys Jensen LOUP CITY- Gladys M. Jensen, 88, of Loup City, formerly of Dannebrog, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999 at the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church at Dannebrog in the family center. The Rev. Rob Pearson will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakridge Cemetery at Dannebrog. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the Gideon Bible Society or the church. Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Jensen born Dec. 16, 1910, at Hardy to Charles and Susan (Hunt) Berck. At the age of three her family moved to Dannebrog, where she attended school and graduated from high school. She attended beautician school in Omaha. She returned to Dannebrog and worked as a beautician. She married Frode Jensen Nov. 10, 1933 at Dannebrog, where the couple lived. They traveled and stayed in various places throughout the state while Mr. Jensen worked in bridge construction. Mr. Jensen died March 31, 1975. In 1989, Mrs. Jensen moved to the Lakeview Nursing Home in Grand Island. In October of 1993 she moved to the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dannebrog. She is survived by one daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Warren) McMullen of Shoreview, Minn., one son, Stanley of Dannebrog, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Other than her husband, Mrs. Jensen was preceded in death by five brothers, Arthur, Charles, Burdett, Lloyd and Clyde and one sister, Pearl Good. Grand Island Independent - obituary I have written to a lady who has helped me in the past with obituaries in Howard County and if she comes up with anything I will pass it along. Let me know how much information you want on the family. I do have a little about their children. It isn't a branch I've done a lot of research on, but I'll be happy to send what I have. Lars, The 3rd Wisconsin Infantry wasn't at Chickamauga. Here is their battle history. http://3rdwisconsin.com/the-chronology-of-service/ There was another Christian Ludvigson in Company H, 5th Minnesota Infantry, but it wasn't at Chickamauga either. http://www.mnopedia.org/group/fifth-minnesota-volunteer-infantry-regiment Of course, he may have enlisted under a different name. My guess is that Christian Ludvigson probably did die of disease, because he died long after the battle of Chickamauga, and died quite a distance from that battlefield. The only way to make sure is to contact the cemetery directly, their records should say one way or the other. Almost everyone killed during the Civil War were buried on the battlefield or near the hospitals. Most buried in shallow graves. At the end of the war, the government contracted to pay about $1.50 for each set of remains recovered from these shallow graves. They were then removed to the newly created National Cemeteries. More than half of those buried in the Civil War sections of these cemeteries are marked UNKNOWN. Civil War remains are still being found even today. Last year the remains of 40 Confederate soldiers were found in Virginia. Others, both Confederate and Union are discovered from time to time during road construction near battlefields, hospital areas or other troop concentration sites. There are also large burial sites located near Prison of War camps both North and South. There are approximately 6,000 Confederate prisoners buried near Chicago where the POW camp known as Camp Douglas was located. In Maryland, the Point Lookout Cemetery officially records about 6,000 Confederate prisoners having died there, but there may have been as many as 14,000. There are a couple of mass graves containing the remains of about 1,000 UNKNOWN Confederate soldiers on the grounds of the Shiloh Battlefield National Park which were never moved from their original burial pits. It's interesting to note that the government didn't even allow these burial pits to be marked until the 1930's. from what I can tell, the dead from the battle of Chickamauga were buried in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. here is the phone number (423) 855-6590. I didn't find any similar name listed in the Nationwide Gravesite Locator as being buried in Chattanooga Cemetery. It seems unlikely that someone killed at Chickamauga would be buried in Indiana, unless he died of wounds later, which is possible. I'd contact the cemetery where he is buried, their records would probably give a cause of death, whether from wounds or disease.
