    1. [NOR] Gunhild Maria Andersdatter 1846 Norway - 1870 Wisconsin
    2. DON HENDERSON via
    3. I joined this list a bit ago and have enjoyed everyone's questions and suggestions. I have found some new resources for my own research. I have found an ELCA record on Ancestry that I need a couple of words translated, but I don't believe you can use a link? If I am wrong, please let me know. I am hoping someone with access to Ancestry would look at a death record. If you do an exact search for Gunhild Maria, born 1847, died 1870 and there will be only one record. It is the fourth entry on the left page:"Gunhild Maria, daughter of Andreas Nelsen and wife Ingeberg, born 15th January 1847, married with Hans Johansen 5th May 1870, died in -?- -?- November 1870." I am hoping this might be a clue for something - anything. I can find nothing of this marriage. Or on the 1870 census, which is dated August, so they should be listed. She is not with her family in Palmyra, Jefferson Co, WI. She is buried at Skoponong Cemetery in Palmyra, with her family. In fact, she has a shared headstone with her sister, Kari, who died four years after her, and on this headstone is listed her husband again, Hans Johansen ( Gunhild Marie Nielson (1846 - 1870) - Find A Grave Memorial ). There is an entry for him at FindaGrave, but I don't believe he is buried there (engraved over the sisters' names is 'here is resting the dust from sisters'). I have never come across a death record with husband and marriage date listed (maybe because so recent?), then his name on the headstone also, when he is not buried there. The family was in Gibralter, Door Co, WI in 1860 and she was 14 years old. I don't know when between 1860 and 1870 they moved to Palmyra, but maybe she stayed in Door County? She was buried the day after she died, so she must have been living close. Any help would be appreciated - she has been a mystery. Wanda

    1. [NOR] Peter and Sarah Olson in Oil City ,PA and MN
    2. Erik Hov via
    3. Hello. I am trying to find out more about this couple ,and some of their possible descendants. Peder Olsen as he was in Norway ,was born at Tuveng in Tynset ,Hedmark 3 May 1846 ,and was married in Tynset 12 Apr 1871 to Sigrid Bersvendsdatter Maana ,born 4 Jun 1848 in Alvdal ,Hedmark. I have not found their emigration to US ,but they probably emigrated the same day they were married. That is according to the record of their arrival back to Norway in 1880. In the 1880 census they were living in Oil City ,Pennsylvania https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MWVV-WKY with the children Sarah born Norway abt 1872 ,Ole born Norway abt 1874 ,and Martin Astan ,born PA ca 1877. Strangely this family are surnamed "Astan" in 1880 ,and I have no idea why. More interesting is that they came back to Tuveng in Tynset on 29 Oct 1880 Source information: Hedmark county, Tynset in Tynset, Parish register copy nr. 6 (1880-1899), Imigration records 1880-1888, page 259. Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=3593&idx_id=3593&uid=ny&id x_side=-242 Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20060419020393.jpg They got another son in Tynset 1882 ,before at least the father Peder emigrated again. I have in my notes that Peder emigrated on the ship D/S Origo 16 apr 1882 ,and that his wife and children emigrated after him ,but I haven`t found the emigration records. Apparently the birthplaces from the 1880 census are wrong ,since the record from 1880 when the family came back from US clearly tell that all the 3 older children were born in Oil City. What I know about them is this: 1 Sery/Sigrid/Sarah Olson ,born in Oil City ,PA 1 Sep 1872 ,christened same place 6 Nov 1872 , 2 Ole Johannes Olson ,born in Oil City ,PA 24 Aug 1874 ,christened same place 29 Sep 1874 3 Martin Bertinius Olson ,born in Oil City ,PA 5 Jan 1877 ,christened same place 4 Feb 1877 , 4 Bernhard Magnus Olson/Olsen ,born at Nedre Kjæreng/Tuveng in Tynset 23 Sep 1882 ,and died in Minneapolis ,MN 11 Nov 1914......probably never married. I am in touch with some descendants of the son Ole ,but they don`t know anything about his family. Ole was married to Ida Ween ,and he also later went by the name Ole Ween. Ole died in 1933 in Minneapolis ,and it is said by the family that he was born in Pennsylvania to parents in Minnesota. Guess that would mean that Ole`s parents lived in Minnesota after they emigrated?. I have not found the emigration of Sigrid and her children after 1882 ,and no record of Sigrid after 1882 ,and don`t know if Peder and Sigrid got more children either after Bernhard. Only clue I have is from Ole`s obituary from 1933 that says that he is survived by a brother. (of course it gives no name or place). If Peder and Sigrid had only these 4 children ,Martin should be the brother still alive in 1933 ,but I don`t KNOW it. I would appreciate any information on the family of Peder/Peter and Sigrid/Sarah!!. Hope someone can find something!!. Thanks. Erik

    3. Hi Listers - I ran across the movie Max Manus: Man of War on Hulu (with English subtitles), then found out it's based on a true story from WWII Norway, so have included links to some Wikipedia pages I found online. Just at the end before the credits, there is a photo of the actor on the left, and a photo of the real person on the right, and it gives the fate and medals and honors given to some of these individuals. The Norwegian Independent Company 1 Wiki page lists more people than the movie portrays. I'm not sure what copyright issues are involved so I'm not sure who will be able to see Hulu offerings from Norway, but I think of those who appreciate history and who can see this movie will like the movie. 1. [NOR] Transcription/Translation Assistance Requested: Business Execution Document from Hedmark, 1847
    2. James Aylard via
    3. My great-great grandfather, Ole Ericksen of Qvernholtet farm in Trysil, Hedmark, was subject to what appears to be called a "business execution" when he was unable to pay a substantial sum of money in 1847. Jostein Austrheim generously provided a nearly complete transcription of the document to me about six weeks ago, and I have since been using automated translation tools such as Google Translate and Bing Translator, as well as a few others, to provide a rough translation from the original Dano-Norsk into English, and I have then attempted to massage that stilted, mechanically produced language into something that flows more comfortably and is more easily understood. I have taken Jostein's transcription and placed it in the left-hand column of a two-column Microsoft Word document. I have worked my translation in the right column, splitting the document in places to keep the two languages in fairly close synchronization. I have numbered the sections to make it easier to discuss a smaller portion of the document by simply referring to the section number (these are arbitrary and not in the original document). I have also highlighted in yellow those words that caused me particular confusion or where I didn't feel I could make a reasonable guess at their meaning (sometimes I tried to, sometimes I didn't). Now I am looking for additional assistance from this list on the following questions: - Would you read and assess my translation and suggest corrections and improvements? (There are likely many!) - Jostein translated between 90-95% of the document, but has graciously agreed to allow me to ask the list to make sense out of the fraction he could not transcribe (noted by blue-highlighted question marks in his transcription), as well as to suggest an alternative transcription if anyone reads the original text differently than he did. - Provide understanding of the various abbreviations used in the document (I figured out that Spd means speciedaler, and that s. typically mean skilling, both denominations of currency in use at that time). For instance, what do *utleggsf.* (Section 1), *CK* and *s.* (Section 2), *c.* (Section 7), and *m.p.p.* (Section 11) mean? - Provide background of legal proceedings during the mid-nineteenth century in Norway to help me better understand how typical or how uncommon this type of legal proceeding was? And does anything stand out to you as particularly noteworthy from these proceedings? - Is a "business execution" the same thing I would call a "business foreclosure"? Or could an execution be any range of actions taken with regard to a business? And after translating this entire document, I wasn't entirely sure which business was primarily targeted by the action, although I assume it was his farm, Qvernholtet. Any thoughts on that? Jostein's transcription and my parallel translation are available in Word format here: https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=48BE58D24FDFE3B5!82614&authkey=!ABkBxq-sde6MriA&ithint=file%2cdocx The permanent pagelink for the original Arkivverket document is available here: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:tl_read?idx_id=13570&uid=ny&idx_side=-411 I look forward to any feedback on any aspect of these documents in response to the questions I've asked above. Thanks! -- James Aylard

What I do know is that he joined the Royal Norwegian Navy as a Gunner in late 1941 I have photo's of him at a passing out parade & Xmas party in Canada. Dad joined the M/S "Viva" on the 13/2/1942 don't know the port probably in Canada or USA. Signed off the "Viva" in Sydney Australia 20/11/1942 & then on the S/S "Agnes", after this point all his signing on & off are in Sydney. He arrived back in Sydney on the M/S "Anders Jane" the day the war ended with Japan. Is there some web site that I could find out the information that I"m after?? I'm really interested in his time in the merchant navy. Also is there records at which ports ships docked during the war??
