Hei Lars, It doesn’t say where the marriage took place, but the article (2 pages long) seems to be listing every marriage that took place in Dane County for the year 1920. I haven’t been able to find anything else about them in the papers. I noticed another family tree online that run by David Mindel. http://tinyurl.com/oxlsqlm His tree suggests that Severina went by the name Susan (Midthun). You might try contacting him. > Did it by any chance say WHERE the marriage took place?
Dear Kay and other Listers! Thanks a million, Kay, for solving this big problem of mine! So, Charles died while visiting Norway, and my next step will be trying to figure out where in Norway he died. I suppose Bergen is the most likely place, but we just don't know... In the meantime I have also found the explanations of the seaman titles of his. Apparently he ended up as a captain (master)! Dear Mark and other Listers! Thank you very much, Mark, for commenting on my inquiry about Synneva Jenson (Hillestad) from Astoria, SD. I am surprised you found no mention of her in the local paper. She lived with her widowed daughter Christie, Mrs. Peter Olson (Walager) on a farm in Scandinavia township, Deuel Co., SD, and they are all buried in the Wood Lake cemetery! Whether Synneva had other names? She was born as Synneva Torstensdotter Quam and had been married to Knut Jensson Quam or Hillestad who died in Norway in 1862. I guess the only alternative names I can think of, would be Quam or Knutson... Thanks again, Mark, for looking! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Hi Marilyn, Do you know if Berg had any sisters? Perhaps the first one would have been named after her grandmother. Dear Listers! Do we have any experts on seaman titles? Karl Johan aka Charles John Gudmundsen born in Bergen, Norway Sep. 2, 1892 emigrated in 1911 as a "jungmann" (mate?) to America and married in Bronx Co., NY June 4, 1921 to Ruth Christensdotter Landaas, born in Mandal, Norway Sep. 24, 1891. The couple resided in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY Charles supposedly died in Brooklyn, NY, and as a widow Ruth moved to Bethel, Sullivan Co., NY, but she died at Cheshire, CT Nov. 25, 1980. Charles Gudmundsen is recorded many times on ancestry.com being a seaman and sailing, I would say, all over the world. He obviously started out as a "mate", then I see in 1934 he is referred to as a "chief offer", and from about 1940 he was a "master". The last time I find him as such is in 1953, when he sailed to Bremerhaven in Germany. Only in a newspaper clipping from 1946 he is referred to as a "skipper" sailing from Mexico to San Francisco, CA. Can anyone help me, please, to explain these seaman titles of Charles'? The very last entry on ancestry.com is from 1954 when he was on a flight by SAS from Oslo to New York! We know Charles was dead by 1968 (when a sister of his died in Bergen, Norway), as he was then survived by children Karl, Gerd and Borre, but so far I have been unable to find an exact date (and place) of his death! Can anyone help me, please? Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane
Hello all, After years of searching and a trip to Norway, with your help I found Berg's family and where he came from. Berge was born in 1842 and emigrated in 1864. None of the historic Deuel County newspapers are online, so you’ll need to look at the microfilms. Your best bet would probably be the “Clear Lake Courier”. Believe it or not I actually own a Diazo copy that covers 28 April 1910 through 20 Feb 1913. I’m not seeing anything about her though. Astoria, Fish Lake, Brandt, Toronto, Norden, Gary, Altamont and other towns all had regular coverage. I’m surprised I didn’t see anything. It’s a great paper. Absolutely full of local happenings, gossip, news about former residents who have moved out of the area. In the 5 May 1910 edition, Norden local happenings mentions that; “Melia Jensen visited her sister, Mrs. Carl Iverson over Sunday.” The 19 May 1910 edition, Local news for Gary mentions that; “Jesse Jensen has been visiting his parents and friends here a week or more, left Thursday by way of Aberdeen for his new location in a lumber yard in the northwestern part of North Dakota.” I see a young Lillie Jensen getting married in the 28 July edition. She seems to be the daughter of C. B. Jensen, but there is no mention of a death, so she wouldn’t be related. Would there be another name she went by? 4 Aug 1910 article: “Five deaths, eleven births and one divorce were recorded in the office of the clerk of courts for the 31 days of July.” Seems like it should be easy to find something if she was one of only 5 deaths. -Mark

Lars, Did she use the name Christine Nelson? I found a marriage in the Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, WI) on Friday, April 5, 1889: MARRIED PECKHAM--NELSON.--At the Methodist Episcopal parsonage, Madison, March 27, 1889, by Rev. W. J McKay, Mr. John J. Peckham, of Sun Prairie, and Miss Christine Nelson, of Bristol this county. Also in Rockford Republic (Rockford, IL) on Thursday, January 3, 1901: LICENSED TO WED Joseph H Rubbert, Mason city. . . 35 Christa Peckham, Madison . . . . . 32 That was all I found. Germany, Select Births and Baptisms, 1558-1898 (in German)▼ Birth, Baptism & Christening Name: Christiana Rubbert Spouse: Wilhelm Fehrholz -----Original Message----- From: Lars E. Dear Listers, Another individual who is so well hiding I cannot find her. Maybe your eyes are better than mine? Christiana aka Christie Boyum, born in Dane Co., WI May 31, 1868, first married in Madison, WI May 27, 1889 to John Irvin Peckham (1865-1950). I believe they lived in or near Madison, WI, but they divorced about 1895. second married at Rockford, IL Jan. 1, 1901 to Joseph Hubertus Rubbert (1865-1918). They lived on a farm in Falls township near Mason City, Cerro Gordo Co., IA, but after Joseph died Apr. 11, 1918, Christie moved to Beaver Dam, Dane Co, WI where she lived in 1920. We know Christie was still alive in 1925 (address unknown), but then she "disappears"! I should add that Christie had an only daughter: Ruby H. Rubbert, born at Plymouth, Cerro Gordo Co., IA Dec. 16, 1901, was married at Bloomington, Monroe Co., IN Aug. 10, 1929 to Noel Montgomery, born at Mecca, IN Sep. 14, 1904. The 1930 census shows this couple residing at Lapel, Madison Co., IN, but Christie Rubbert is NOT with them. Questions: * Can newspaper announcements be found regarding her divorce from John Peckham about 1895? * Can newspaper announcements or obituaries or even other records be found regarding Christie Rubbert's death after 1925? Thanks a million for any suggestions in regard to "long-lost" Christie! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Foss (1860?-1927) and hisbackground - help to interpret the Minneapolis city directory? Dear Listers, This problem has been discussed before, but only as part of the Christine Thompson McCaffrey Johnson (1854-1920) "enigma" in and around Grand Forks, ND. Today I wish to focus on one of her Norwegian son-in-laws who appears quite impossible to track down! Nicholas "Nick" P. FOSS enters the family as he on Nov. 15, 1893 was married in Grand Forks, ND to Ella Thompson McCaffrey. He was a painter and is said to be 31 years old at the time, but the 1900 census shows he was born in Norway in August of 1857. He ended his life by being killed by a train near Devils Lake, ND on Sep. 26, 1927, aged about 65. Newspaper items concerning this accident have been located before. But where did Nick come from? I am pretty sure I have found him living in Minneapolis, MN at the time of the 1885 state census. Then he is 25 years old and is called Nick FUSS, and the city directories show him several times: ~~~~~ 1882/1883: no entry 1883/1884: no entry 1884/1885: N. P. Foss pts. St P R'y r 118 Cedar Ave. So 1885/1886: Nicholas Foss emp W. Babcock 1886/1887: no entry 1887/1888: Nicholas P. Foss ptr. r1920 S 2d 1888/1889: no entry 1889/1890: no entry ~~~~~ But how are these entries to be understood? I presume the one from 1887/1888 "ptr" suggests he was indeed a PAINTER residing on 1920 S 2nd Avenue (or Street), but what does the 1884/1885 listing mean? Then I also have a rather "puzzling" piece of information from FamilySearch showing this birth record from Chicago, IL: ~~~~~ Name: Foss Event Type: Birth Event Date: 06 Oct 1881 Event Place: Chicago, Cook, Illinois, United States Registration Place: , Cook, Illinois Gender: Male Ethnicity: American Race: White Father's Name: Nicklas Foss Mother's Name: Margarita Certificate Number: 1593 ~~~~~ It may seem like "our" Nick had been married before to this Margaret, and they had a son, but this is the only entry for that couple! Or can more information be located in Chicago, IL on this man? According to the 1900 census Nick had emigrated in 1877, but I just cannot find any emigrant from Norway "matching" this person! Maybe newspaper items will mention him? Or city directories in Chicago, IL? Or could he have other Foss relatives in Minneapolis, MN? Any suggestions would be more than welcome! You are my last hope!
