Hi, Inger Andreasdatter born 1874, Løten, Norway emigrated Oct. 08, 1889. I need help to find her i USA. Hans Myhre
Dear Annette, John, Hans and other Listers! Thanks a million for your additional comments on Charles Gudmundsen and his "endeavors". It sounds like he had a very interesting life, kind of "different" from most of the emigrant families which I am researching... Very sincerely yours, Lars E. I Can anyone help me with this man. I find his baptism in Meldal 19 April 1847 born to Jon Jonsen and Berit Olsdatter. Then I find his marriage 8 April 1869 to Ingeborg Jørgendatter in Meldal. Then I cannot find him until 1900 when he leaves for America from Trondheim. I cannot find the birth of any children nor find him on any census. I believe he lived on Snoen farm (Rennebue?) as he take that last name in the US. I am having trouble finding his father also who lived at Stenshagen in Meldal I think. Thank you for any help. Virginia Lindsey

http://snipurl.com is a website (app) that shortens long urls into shorter, more manageable ones, so this could have originally been really anything. The 1865 census for Kragerø lists a great grand uncle as a Sturmand - does that refer to a ship mate occupation. On the same census a great great grandmother is listed as a Spiseværtinde - does that have something to do with eating. I looked up these two words in a recent Norwegian-English dictionary - that is where I got my ideas of what they might have to do with. Sent from my iPad John Ferman Minneapolis, MN
Lars, Apparently Ruth and the children went back and forth to Norway because familysearch has them on numerous Passenger and Crew Lists. The address on the ones I looked at was Brooklyn, NY. This list says Borre and Gerd were born in Mandel, Norway, as was Ruth. https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1942-22093-12898-71?cc=1923888 Apparently the family traveled a lot, maybe because Charles was at sea. Gerd's marriage took place in Los Angeles, California. It looks like Borre also became a sailor. Annette On 5/6/15, Lars E. Hello Listers, I will be going to the Minnesota Historical Society on the 12th of May. If you have a death cert that you are missing, I will set aside sometime and pick them up for you. All you will need to do is go on the Minnesota Death Index http://people.mnhs.org/dci/ and locate the death certificate number and send it to me offline. I will try to get as many as time permits. The couple resided in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY Charles supposedly died in Brooklyn, NY, and as a widow Ruth moved to Bethel, Sullivan Co., NY, but she died at Cheshire, CT Nov. 25, 1980. Charles Gudmundsen is recorded many times on ancestry.com being a seaman and sailing, I would say, all over the world. He obviously started out as a "mate", then I see in 1934 he is referred to as a "chief offer", and from about 1940 he was a "master". The last time I find him as such is in 1953, when he sailed to Bremerhaven in Germany. Only in a newspaper clipping from 1946 he is referred to as a "skipper" sailing from Mexico to San Francisco, CA. Can anyone help me, please, to explain these seaman titles of Charles'? The very last entry on ancestry.com is from 1954 when he was on a flight by SAS from Oslo to New York! We know Charles was dead by 1968 (when a sister of his died in Bergen, Norway), as he was then survived by children Karl, Gerd and Borre, but so far I have been unable to find an exact date (and place) of his death!
