You should be able to find an appropriate adapter at a local electronics store. I have done so in the past (I can never seem to find the one I bought for a previous trip). Norway uses pretty standard European 220V plugs. Enjoy the trip! You can actually contact the Murphy Law Library Special Collections section, and they will search for the probate records, copy them, and mail them for a rather reasonable fee. http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/cgi/f/findaid/findaid-idx?c=wiarchives;view=reslist;subview=standard;didno=uw-whs-vern0024 http://www.uwlax.edu/MurphyLibrary/Special-Collections/About-special-collections/ That may be an option if there is no one locally willing to search for them for you. You're actually quite lucky. Almost all counties in WI have disposed of all their historic criminal and civil case files. According to WI law, counties only have to retain criminal cases 75 years, and civil cases (including probate, divorce and adoption cases) only 35 years. When the time limit is up, they are free to destroy them, which most counties have elected to do. > Date: Fri, 29 May 2015 17:30:19 -0500 > To: norway@rootsweb.com > Subject: [NOR] Research assistance at the Vernon County, WI probate court in Viroqua, WI, please? > From: norway@rootsweb.com > > Dear Listers! > > In order to find further leads to solve my problem tracing the Charles and Christine Shaw family, I am searching for someone who is willing to spend an hour or two at the Vernon County, WI Probate court in Viroqua, WI researching the probate file for Christine's father (or parents): > > Einer J. When we took an electrical appliance to Norway for my niece, I got an adaptor at Radio Shack. It said right on the box which country it would work in. Dear Listers! In order to find further leads to solve my problem tracing the Charles and Christine Shaw family, I am searching for someone who is willing to spend an hour or two at the Vernon County, WI Probate court in Viroqua, WI researching the probate file for Christine's father (or parents): Einer J. Overboe, died in Sterling township, Vernon Co., WI Oct. 17, 1925. His wife Margaret Overboe had died in Vernon Co., WI May 28, 1919, but the following were their children: 1. Son Thomas Overboe of Richland Co., ND 2. Daughter Mary Overboe Grove of Goodhue Co., MN, died in 1914 leaving several children 3. Daughter Anna Margaret "Margaret" Overboe Quam of Yellow Grass, SK 4. Daughter Karen Kirstine "Christine" Overbnoe SHAW of ?? - deceased leaving two children Margaret and Donald 5. Daughter Ingeborg "Emma" Overboe Runice of Crawford Co., WI 6. Son Peter Overboe on the home farm in Sterling township, Vernon Co., WI - died single Dec. 12, 1949 7. Son Ole Overboe also on the home farm in Sterling township, Vernon Co., WI During one of my research trips to the United States, possibly in 1982, I viewed the probate file in question. Karen Kirstine "Christine" SHAW's children's whereabouts were unknown when the probate was started, but my time was very limited, so I was unable to see whether the probate court was ever able to locate them during the later court proceedings! And I never studied the probate record for Peter Overboe who died single in 1949. The Shaw children would have been heirs of Peter's as well! I know this is a lot to ask from the NORWAY listers, but if someone lives not too far away from Viroqua, WI, I would indeed appreciate your help, which will make me indebted to you forever! Thanks a million! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

Need help with the church date listed in the transcribed record for the baptism. As you know, I never understand them. I get that "Epiph" is Epiphany, but there are certainly no epiphanies for me with ecclesiastical dates!!! The date of birth I have from the transcription, but I don't know what the date of baptism is. Mange Tusen Takk in advance for the baptism date in a recognizable format. :-) Stephen/Stephan Nielsen, son of Niels Olsen & Berit Stephensdatter. The modern spelling of the farm name is Skjelstad and the name shows up often in my family's records; I found the location of the farm on the map a long time ago. In adulthood, Stephen married and moved to Forsell (same sogn, prestegjeld). Also in the household is a son Alva (may have been Alois). It says that Mary has had 12 children, all living. You'd think there would be descendants. A search on familysearch.org for Maria Gottfried, residence Sauk, Wisconsin, turned up marriages with her as mother of the groom or bride for Joseph Grauvogl in 1907, Anna Grauvogl to John Emmer in 1895, Maria Grauvogl to Hubert Niessbaum in 1906. Maybe following one of these families might lead to a descendant who knows something. There was a reporter for the Sioux Falls, SD Argus Leaderin the 1990s named Ann Grauvogl. That was the name that came up most often in a search on genealogybank.com. I have no idea if she is related. Annette On Mon, May 25, 2015 at 7:27 AM, Lars E. Hello, folks...I have a bit of Norwegian below that needs better translation than Google Translate and I can give it! If you have a moment, would someone please give me an English translation? (This quote comes from Gravem, the "old homestead" of my gggrandfather--I can see why he decided to come to America!) Thank you!Nancy

Dear Earl, Mark, Bev and other Listers! Thank you very much for your interesting messages in regard to the Shaw family, some of which came off-list. I am so touched and impressed to see how you all try to help me, and I have studied the various "candidates" as well as I can. * The pallbearer Charles Shaw from Helena, MT 1939 would, in my opinion, be a little old to be a pallbearer, don't you think? He was about 84 at the time... * Mrs. Margaret Shaw, who died at Anaconda, MT in 1918, whom you Mark told me about, was 34 years old, so I guess she is too old to be "our" Margaret..., and she was obviously married to someone named Shaw... * Charles Shaw, the brakeman who was killed in the train accident in the fall of 1900, came from Salida, CO, and the 1900 census shows him in Salida, CO as an unmarried boy of 20 years of age still residing at home with his parents, so he cannot be the one either... * Sam O. Shaw of Butte, MT who died in 1930 and was survived by brother Charles Shaw in Canada, was apparently from a different family. Here is Sam's marriage record: Name: Samuel O Shaw Event Type: Marriage Event Date: 22 Jan 1909 Event Place: Missoula, , Montana Age: 44 Birth Year (Estimated): 1865 Father's Name: Samuel H Shaw Mother's Name: Emma C Gallup Spouse's Name: Sadie F Ayers Spouse's Age: 32 Spouse's Birth Year (Estimated): 1877 Spouse's Father's Name: Ailin Ayers Spouse's Mother's Name: Almira Miner So I guess we are still at "point 0".... This family is sure hiding well! Could it be that Charles did return to Canada after all? Thanks again for all of your wonderful assistance in his matter! I keep crossing my fingers and hope... This family has been one of the most frustrating ones I have ever been researching, but I have managed to trace families before which probate courts, whether it be in Norway (one case from the 1910's - later also tried by the Salvation Army!) or in Yankton Co., SD (one case from the 1920's which I solved in part), never did, so I haven't given up quite yet. I just noticed that you said Charles Shaw might have ben a railroad fireman. These articles sound like a good match. Idaho Statesman; 21 Nov. 1900; page 5 FATAL WRECKS OCCUR IN COLORADO Denver, Colo., Nov. 20 - Two fatal wrecks occurred on the Denver & Rio Grande railway this morning. In Idaho there is no waiting period between being issued a marriage license and getting married. It's likely still true that divorces are still easy to obtain, too (altho that comes with a residency requirement whereas there is no residency requirement for marriage licenses and marriages). http://www.idaho.gov/family_records/marriage.html FYI, to add another dimension to the location, Wallace used to have many "houses of ill-repute." Many, many decades ago when politicians wanted to be elected they'd run on a platform of shutting down the houses of prostitution..., but that never lasted longer than the campaigns. The largest silver mines were between Kellogg & Wallace - on May 2, 1972, the Sunshine Mine collapsed near Kellogg, 91 were killed, and it now has a memorial at the entrance. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunshine_Mine Beste hilsen, Bev ----- Original Message ----- From: Gregory Holter via <norway@rootsweb.com> To: Lars E. Dear Listers! This is a problem that has bothered me for at least 25 years. Maybe now has the time come to find the answer? ~~~~~~~~~~ Charles J(ames?) ON probably lived 1881 in Yale & Hope, BC (railroad fireman) married Mar. 6, 1888 at Helena, MT Karen Kirstine aka Christine (Einersdotter) OVERBOE daughter of Einar OVERBOE and Margaret HILLESTAD born June 2, 1865 in Hafslo parish, Luster Co., Norway emigrated in 1876 marriage witnesses: George N.
