    3. I think we should wait until all the data gets switched over to the new web page. It said there would be limited functionality for a bit. It is sort of like redecorating the kitchen - things a little messy before it gets all done for the better. A big thing I noticed right away is the https meaning it is on the more secure URL stuff - I don't know all the technical language. I too, really like the old version. But once I learn the latest search process, I really like it - especially looking at church records. And that IS still on the new web page - finding was a bit challenging. Go to the Menu and at the left column, click on the second item: Scanned Archives. The person searches still won't work for you if a record or census hasn't been indexed first - and lots of them haven't been indexed yet. Let's be patient - 1. OUR ancestral records are FREE; 2. change means keeping updated and being able to add more data easier; and 3. our old mind set often needs to be jostled to keep mentally alert. End of sermon :) Linda in Des Moines, IA

    3. Have you ever seen a woman do "ugly crying" because something is so awful? That's what I feel like now after reading Reina's email and discovering the horror for myself. I hadn't even gotten used to the second iteration of Digitalarkivet and that awful search engine..., and now this! I spent ten minutes alone just trying to find a way to get to any kind of search engine to find any databases (even after I found where I could switch to English) and couldn't get past the first page. By sheer accident I stumbled upon a page to select something, got the 1865 census images, and found pages I already have (after going to my records to find the school district which has never been an issue in search criteria before for me since so many records turned up)..., but at least I found SOMETHING besides the first page. Now I don't know if I'll ever be able to find the page I found that on so I can try to search for something else since I only found what I did by accident. This is a bloody nightmare! Oh, how I miss the simplicity of the first version of Digitalarkivet where I could so easily find anything I wanted because the index was so simple I could find what I needed at a glance...!!! Even though I didn't know what I was doing at first (late 2001-'02 before I found the Norway List), at least I could scroll through transcribed records until I got the hang of it (which is where I first discovered I/J and V/W being used interchangeably), and after that I was successful in finding data via the search engine, first on my own ancestors (there were a lot of databases from local records which is why I was so successful in finding information), and then I branched out to finding ancestors for other branches of the family in different fylkes. After microfilm records were introduced, even that had an easy index. I used to brag that it was easy to find genealogy data in Norwegian records. No more. This may actually drive me away from trying to find anything in Norwegian records since it's so difficult to even get off the first page! I hope whoever dreamt up this nightmare is demoted and transferred somewhere out of reach of a computer keyboard. Haven't they heard of KISS? Keep it Simple, Stupid? Simplicity is the key to finding genealogy data, starting with the elegantly simple index in the first version of Digitalarkivet, and then moving on to the wonderfully easy search engine they had (starting with English at that time all the way through the search criteria and column headers; what a boon for those of us who are not fortunate enough to be taught Norwegian as a second language from grade school forward - it's what first made me deeply appreciate the Norwegian educational system). Now, more than ever, we need that old version of Digitalarkivet to stay online so if we embark on a new line of research we can find something and be rewarded for our initial research efforts before we have to battle an impossible (third) Digitalarkivet database where it seems we are destined to forever search for info we already have on ancestors we already found so we know whether or not our efforts were successful. I've now gone from crying in disappointment and dismay to being just plain angry. If they were going to change things, at least they could have made it as simple as the first version, not messed it up worse than the second version! Dear Mark, Doris, Thelma, Annette, Sarah and other Listers! I contacted the Clerk of Courts in Benton Co., OR back in November last year in order to obtain further details on the marriage and divorce of John B. Skophammer and his 2nd wife Mary, from whom he was divorced at Corvallis, OR in 1956. When I contacted them, I was told the files were out for microfilming, and only today have I received the copies which I asked for! I will send you the entire files off line, as well as the marriage license for John and Mary which I subsequently obtained in scanned version this evening from Harrison, NE. But let me shortly tell you how I understand these documents: * Apparently Mary accused John for inhuman treatment, and at the time of the judgement John was residing in Hillsborough Co., FL. The couple was married at Harrison, NE on Feb. 10, 1941. * From Sioux Co., NE I then received the copy of the marriage license confirming the marriage date of John Bernard Skophammer (48, divorced, born Colfax, ND) and Mary Ellen Bryan (32, widowed. born NV), both of Casper, WY. Her maiden name was Mary E. Sanders, and she was the daughter of F. W. Sanders (born in UT) and Mary Ann Daniels (born in MO). >From this information I thought it would be «easy» to identify this 2nd wife of John’s, but no way! No matter how I search the online records at ancestry.com, I come out empty-handed as far as Mary Ellen and her parents and first marriage is concerned! Where do they hide?? The only thing I do find is from Casper, WY city directories that a seamstress Mrs. Mary E. Bryan resided 1939 and 1941 on 451 and 447 South Spruce in Casper, WY, while in 1937 and 1934 she appears to be the wife of Noel J. Bryan, a sign painter, but living on different addresses…(?). Noel James Bryan was born in Washington Co., MO Apr. 7, 1900 and died at Casper, WY June 6, 1937, buried at Thermopolis, Hot Springs Co., WY. There are several family trees on ancestry including Noel James Bryan, and one of them refers to his wife as Mary E. OGG, but none of the trees have any further details... So where is Mary in the 1940 census? And 1930, 1920 and 1910 censuses?? Thanks again for any suggestions you can give me in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane PS: The Mary Etta Skophammer referred to below, born 1930, is DEFINTELY NOT the one we are looking for! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > On Nov 1, 2016, at 4:13 PM, Mark Erickson <[email protected]> wrote: > > Hei Lars, > Don’t know if you saw this, but someone has added a photo of Mary and John > to myheritage. > https://www.myheritage.com/names/mary_skophammer > <https://www.myheritage.com/names/mary_skophammer> > > According to the public records linked there, she's probably still around. > Mary Etta Skophammer > Born 1930 > > I did a little looking around, and I think I found her.
