    3. William Ogg seems to have been married in 1912. I don’t know what happened to his wife, but I’ll keep looking. It sounds like he was living in Pompey’s Pillar for awhile. Billings Daily Gazette, page 2 Wednesday, March 27, 1912, Billings, Montana WEDDING RECEPTION. A wedding reception was given by Mr. and Mrs. William Ogg of Pompey's Pillar in honor of Mr. and Mrs. George Williams, who were recently married In Billings. A large number of guests attended, refreshments were served at a late hour and ended in wishing the happy couple much success.

    3. I figured quite a bit out with Jerry Lloyd's great find. I located Mary Ellen's obituary, place of birth in Nevada, 1930 census and a first husband, William Ogg from Oklahoma along with information on Mary's daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Ogg) Vasquez who used the Bryan surname. Mary and JB Skophammer were witnesses. Altogether, Mary Ellen had four marriages and her mother had three. She was born to Frank and Mary Sanders in Winnemucca, Nev. on Jan. 3, 1908.  She was raised in Wyoming and came to Portland in 1939. She stayed there until 1974 when she moved to Canby. In 1920 the mother Mary is remarried to William W. Dear Mark, Doris, Thelma, Annette, Sarah and other Listers! I contacted the Clerk of Courts in Benton Co., OR back in November last year in order to obtain further details on the marriage and divorce of John B. Skophammer and his 2nd wife Mary, from whom he was divorced at Corvallis, OR in 1956. When I contacted them, I was told the files were out for microfilming, and only today have I received the copies which I asked for!  I will send you the entire files off line, as well as the marriage license for John and Mary which I subsequently obtained in scanned version this evening from Harrison, NE. But let me shortly tell you how I understand these documents: * Apparently Mary accused John for inhuman treatment, and at the time of the judgement John was residing in Hillsborough Co., FL.  The couple was married at Harrison, NE on Feb. 10, 1941. * From Sioux Co., NE I then received the copy of the marriage license confirming the marriage date of John Bernard Skophammer (48, divorced, born Colfax, ND) and Mary Ellen Bryan (32, widowed. born NV), both of Casper, WY. Her maiden name was Mary E. Sanders, and she was the daughter of F. W. Sanders (born in UT) and Mary Ann Daniels (born in MO). From this information I thought it would be «easy» to identify this 2nd wife of John’s, but no way!  No matter how I search the online records at ancestry.com, I come out empty-handed as far as Mary Ellen and her parents and first marriage is concerned!  Where do they hide?? The only thing I do find is from Casper, WY city directories that a seamstress Mrs. Mary E. Bryan resided 1939 and 1941 on 451 and 447 South Spruce in Casper, WY, while in 1937 and 1934 she appears to be the wife of Noel J. Bryan, a sign painter, but living on different addresses…(?).  Noel James Bryan was born in Washington Co., MO Apr. 7, 1900 and died at Casper, WY June 6, 1937, buried at Thermopolis, Hot Springs Co., WY. There are several family trees on ancestry including Noel James Bryan, and one of them refers to his wife as Mary E. OGG, but none of the trees have any further details... So where is Mary in the 1940 census?  And 1930, 1920 and 1910 censuses?? Thanks again for any suggestions you can give me in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

My goodness, are some of these emigrant families ever «twisted», but somehow most of them have to give in for our perseverance, and I am very grateful to you, Sarah, for having so well completed the biography of Mary Ellen Sanders Ogg Bryan Skophammer! I am indeed impressed! There is at this point not very much to be added about Mary and her life, the only things would be: ** The exact dates and places of her marriages to William Ogg and to Noel James Bryan? ** And maybe some biography on William Ogg, who also seems to be a «non-existing» person outside of the 1930 census!? Thanks again for your wonderful assistance in this matter! Am I ever happy to be part of the NORWAY-list! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. 2. Hello Tom, I would say: try a bygdebook of the area where your ancestor lived. Here you find some titles under the city of your choice (bygdebøker) <http://www.disnorge.no/genress/kategorier.php?intKatre=100012> site DIS Norge <http://www.disnorge.no/genress/kategorier.php?intKatre=99999> The books themselves are not online, but maybe you can become a member and than can do look-ups in the books themselves. I do'nt know precisely how you can reach these books. Good luck! 1. Re: [NOR] Hans Mortensen probate record
    2. Lars E. Oyane
    3. Dear Lenise, The probate record that you have found, is definitely for the «right» person. However, since the debts exceeded the income, there was nothing left for the heirs, and their names are omitted. A probate record was normally started within 30 days of the death of a person with a so-called «probate registration» (petition for administration). These probate registrations were often kept in separate books. Then there were separate books for «probate negotiations» and a third series of books for «probate settlements» (final papers). The book you refer to here, is the «probate settlements» book. From most areas in Norway there exist from the early 1800’s and onwards the «probate dockets» («skiftedokument»), including all business connected to the probate, registration, negotiations and settlements, all kinds of receipts, correspondence etc.), but these have not been filmed, and it is a very time-consuming activity to go thru them… Hopefully this helps you at least a little bit… Very sincerely yours, Lars E. In 1920 the mother Mary is remarried to William W. 3. Thanks! Minnesota doesn't have nearly as much information online as one could wish for. I was in genealogy heaven with DA#1, followed by finding the Norway List. Fabulous genealogy info, GREAT people, wonderful scenery and music on YouTube. My pride at being descended from Norwegian immigrants (plus others) knew no bounds. If Minnesota has information online, maybe it's because we retain the helpful genes of our Norwegian immigrant ancestors (we try, but we'll never catch up to Norway). At one point (or maybe it's still true) the most Norwegians and descendants of Norwegians found outside of Norway were right here in Minnesota (ditto Sweden). The kings and queens of both Norway and Sweden have visited us at various times because of that. The Scandinavian pride runs deep here, particularly out in the more rural areas where people of those same immigrant ancestors still live. 3. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" One of my favorite sayings! You read my mind, didn't you, Don?!? ;-) If it makes you feel any better, when I had to change the logos on my Bookmarks Toolbar to accommodate the new DA#3 logo and eliminate the ones that got the 404 error pages, I found this DA#2 link still works. The original DA#1 link works to find data I found years ago, including the emigration database that actually works (so far, right now, today). Well..., TODAY the two links work. Tomorrow? Who knows? https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/ In my young career days (mid-60s), long before computers, myself and five other women were hired to staff six state police district offices in another state when they were used to having men only throughout the state (they didn't know what to do with us at first). Aside from our regular jobs for which we were hired, we were then transitioned into being police dispatchers before 911 was invented, on top of our regular jobs as clerks, secretaries, and receptionists. We were each in the six different offices alone throughout the state so we functioned as office managers and dispatchers (minus the pay), but we did our jobs efficiently and very well and earned respect the hard way by being very good at our multiple functions within the first year. I invented specialized filing systems in my office, among other things. Again, simplicity and ease of use was the key to successful specialized filing systems. I had no idea I had so many Norwegians in my databases. Besides updating my files with info from DA#2 (and I was nowhere nearly done with updates!), the other thing I've been doing is going back to the old DA#1 and making screen shots of the data in my files (in Mac's v. 9.2 my genealogy program loses the formatting), and saving the screen shots as jpgs with the Paint program (I also delete extra things on pages I don't need while I'm at it). I noticed that after the last changes to DA#1 the English headers have gone away after the first screen and now I have to get copies of the first screen with the English headers for the benefit of some younger relatives with whom I now share data, blend the correct found data with that in the graphics program, because they need the English headers. "The Norwegians have their genealogy data online on the easiest web site I've ever used, and they're all free!" used to be my laughingly triumphant jab at those who thought the US fee-based web sites were the bee's knees (when DA#1 was online - easy indices, easy search engine, complete emigrant ship's lists where I could see who, if anyone, traveled with the emigrants). My bragging rights have been taken away completely with DA#3. I'm still grateful for the free info, but if it's not as easy and practical to use as DA#1, then there's not much point in doing genealogy research in Norwegian records if all one is going to accomplish is frustration after frustration in battling this third new (not-fully-functioning!) database and ending up in tears trying to re-find information I found ten years ago in DA#1, can't find now to "update" links in my database for the second time in less than a year. How the heck am I going to teach newbie genealogists in the family if I can't even find what I'm looking for that I know should "be there?" In over 50 years of doing genealogy research, I have rarely had such a disheartening day as this. One of the things I liked the most was that I could copy and paste, and save, an entire Folktelling schedule, table, for a farm, into an MS Word document in landscape, with all of its attendant information added, and saved to my own computer!
