I am having trouble figuring out the cause of death in this Dec 10, 1894 death record from Vagan in Nordland for Kornelius Olsen. Can anyone help? https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/5733/287
I've never seen one translated into English, but the genealogical information in them is fairly easy to understand even if you do not know much Norwegian. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Susan via NORWAY" <norway@rootsweb.com> To: norway@rootsweb.com Cc: "Susan" <susanlaub@aol.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 27, 2018 8:26:04 PM Subject: [NOR] Farm books Are any of the Farm books translated into English? No, but you could look for his birth and christening in the digitized Frosta church books, since it is given in the 1865 census that he was born in Frosta. When I was in Norway, the genealogy / farm record / parish record books were for sale at the town hall. The local library has one set in most cases, but not for sale. Having visited the Chester Fritz at UND several times, I am quite familiar, and appreciative, of its collection. I came across a 1957 article in the Globe-Gazette of Mason City, Iowa, at newspapers.com, that I had saved (it happened to be on the same page as someone I was looking for) that talks of his tour beginnings. "Luther Professor Plans Tour of Europe in Summer" - for anyone who might be interested. Lars, We are all saddened at the passing of Arne Brekke, he loved going with us to Norway each summer with the Brekke Tours Sogn/Voss/Valdres Heritage Tour. He would spend about 4 days with the tour group and then he would spend the next several weeks in Flåm. Our tour member and I always enjoyed learning from him as he shared knowledge about Norway and his love of Norway. Arne and I would have weekly phone visits and he was very much looking forward to the new Volume 12 Luster Bygdebok and the index book. He had ordered one for the collection and one for me and he was excited for this fall when they would presumably be done. He was very proud of the Arne G. Brekke Bygdebok Collection and it is a wonderful legacy to the Norwegian/American community to have. We will all miss him and for my part I am honored to have been his friend for many years. Thank you for letting the Norway List community know about his passing. We all send blessings to his family. Jean Marthaler

Dear Listers, This is a topic which has been discussed before, but I have today received some interesting information which may help find out more about this interesting person! Edward Sidenbender - son of Charles Thomas Sidenbender (IN) and Guro «Julia» Nelson Beim (NOR), born in St. Paul, MN Apr. 20, 1883 and christened Sep 1, 1884 (re: Christ Lutheran church in St. Paul, MN) or born in St. Paul, MN Dec. 28, 1882 (re: records of the orphanage where he lived until 1895 and the State Public School of Owatonna, MN who was responsible for him from 1895 until he obtained majority on Dec. 28, 1900 In the 1885 census he still lives at home in St. Paul, MN with his parents In the 1895 census he lives at the orphanage in St. Paul, MN In the 1900 census we find him working as a farm laborer with the Alfred Frederick family near Wells, Faribault Co., MN. Until today this was the last we knew of him! In 1907 his (adopted) brother Clarence (Sidenbender) Daggett inquired at the State Public School about him, and he got the following answer: ~~~~~~~~~ Mr. Clarence Daggett Dodge Center, Minn. Dear Sir: I have looked up your brother Edward on our records, and find our last word from him is as follows: Nov. 11, 1903 Edward called at the school for the money due to him from Alfred Frederick, of Wells, Minn., at whose home he was brought up. He stated that after leaving Mr. Frederick's home he went to Seattle, where he shipped on a sailing vessel for Honolulu. Later he went on a government transport to Japan, where he took a sailing vessel for Sydney. He then went to Manila, then to St. Petersburg, Russia, and from there to Hong Kong, China. From there he took a sailing vessel around the Cape of Good Hope to New York, and then came west to Minnesota. He is now going to the northern part of the state to locate on a claim. I expect to be at Wells very soon, and will then see if I can learn anything more from Mr. Frederick's folks about Edward. If I do, I will write. Yours truly, H J J, Agent ~~~~~~~~~ It sure sounds like Edward lived quite an «adventurous» life after he obtained his majority in December of 1900, but now at least we know that in the late fall of 1903 he was heading for Northern Minnesota to settle on a «claim». Still with this information I am unable to «spot» Edward in any later records, and I haven’t yet found him in any passenger records. Is it possible he changed his name?? Or did he go to Canada?? It belongs to the story that Clarence Daggett (1885-1951) later moved to Maryland where he had a family. He never managed to find his brother, and today a granddaughter of his is still trying... Any information anyone can find on Edward and his life would be most interesting, and I thank you all very much for your great assistance in this matter! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

There are several Skaurud families in the Twin Valley area of Minnesota. They are all descendents of John & Martha Skaurud, both of whom came from Norway. John (Olsen) came from the Skaugerud farm near Lena near Lillihammer and originally setteled near Decorah, Iowa. Martha came with her parents and sister and settled there, too. They all attended the Washington Prairie Lutheran Church there. John & Martha married there and all their children were baptized there. They later moved to the Twin Valley area in MN. Some of Martha's sister's descendents are probably still in the Decorah area, although I've not been able to find them. I know the names aren't spelled exactly the same way, but I've seen 'Skaurud" spelled about 8 different ways, so you never know. Happy hunting!
