    3. Okay.... this might help..., maybe. I hope. Jeanne S. hit Reply to Tammy Lundquist's email and included me, so it didn't go to the List.  She mentioned she is using Outlook for her email. Her entire message was run into one long unformatted message exactly like the one Steinar sent, except the lines went across the page instead of stopping halfway across. Could Outlook's plain text emails be part of the problem?  It has removed all formatting, all paragraphs. I don't know..., but it's something to think about for those who know more than I do. Just when something starts working right, computer programmers tinker with it and it all goes out of whack - again.  It's happened periodically every time some new "upgrades" are added somewhere. I'm old school:  If it ain't broke, don't fix it! :-)  Bev From: Jeanne S <norsky123@hotmail.com> To: Bev Anderson <bevgand@yahoo.com>; Tammy Lundquist <tammy_lundquist@hotmail.com> Sent: Thursday, February 26, 2015 11:49 AM Subject: RE: [NOR] Question for the group. #yiv6269942353 #yiv6269942353 --.yiv6269942353hmmessage P{margin:0px;padding:0px;}#yiv6269942353 body.yiv6269942353hmmessage{font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri;}#yiv6269942353

It is not something I have dealt with before and I am confused as to the importance of them - I am guessing to possibly find census records when a transcription is not available? 3. Steinar: Your top part of the reply came to me in proper format, double-spaced.  At the bottom, my first reply to you has no formatting or paragraphs.  Everything is run together.  (I only left a small part to show others as an example; the rest I deleted from this reply.) Of the other people who replied and left my email at the bottom: Catherine, Mark, and Stephen's part of the replies are in proper format, double spaced between paragraphs, but the wrap-around is about 2/3 of the way across the page (it's wide, but I have a menu on the left and an ad on the right).  My part in Catherine's reply has three or four words of the beginning of each paragraph, then the rest is about 2/3 of the page with a wrap-around, but paragraphs are otherwise spaced properly, so it's kind of broken up. Emails from Lenise, Don, Barbara, and John are intact as they wrote them, all properly formatted.  The part of my email on Barbara's reply has the > arrow between paragraphs and on the first line of each paragraph. The only reply with zero formatting on what he was replying to is yours, Steinar. Best Wishes, Bev P.S.  As before, I have put double spaces between paragraphs, the lines go across the page as usual, and it's all properly formatted from my end.  How it arrives in your inbox is entirely between your email program and Rootsweb. A week or two ago I sent off an email withproper formatting, proper spaces, it came to me all run together, andsomeone re-sent my reply with proper spacing and paragraph breaks. I think the original formatting on my end had been the Yahoo htmldefault.  (This was right after Yahoo changed something about theiremail program and added stationery ability, so they had html as thedefault setting.) A few days ago I sent a reply to someone, it had allthe proper spacings, I had hit Return/Enter before and after the links,double-spacings between paragraphs - all the normal things for a clearand concise reply. I was extremely dismayed to see my reply to this otherperson come back to me without proper spaces, the links had been runtogether so they did not look separate, etc., which is how I've seenother emails from other people, too.

I worked very hard to have an easy-to-read email that summarized my questions at a glance and I was surprised and disappointed when it came through the List email to my inbox as jumbled and difficult to read. I have another challenge for you today where I seem to get nowhere...: Ingebrigt Peterson Melheim, born in Hafslo, Norway May 12, 1863 married in Oslo Norway May 13, 1902 to Augusta Andersdotter, born at Hogsaeter, Sweden Nov. 20, 1877 In 1906 Ingebrigt and Augusta emigrated to Newark, NJ continuing the same year to Cleveland, OH I have found absolutely NO sign of this couple in the US except for a passenger record from 1928 when Augusta was back to Norway and reemigrated to the US. Then we read about her the following: * Augusta Melheim, aged 50, married, was naturalized at Glendive, Dawson Co., MT i 1915 * Augusta Melheim travelled 1928 to Lowell, MT, a town which I cannot identify! It is so strange I can see no sign of her in any of my Montana records, so where were they? Any suggestions will be more than appreciated! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. Oyane

As a fond reader of the list I see that I am trashing more and more mails from the group! I don't even care to read them! WHY? The readers of the list and writers to the list don't use any spaces or RETUN in their letters. The whole thing for me seems as an endless page of letters. You really need to look knowing what is the question or answer. I think education was to learn how to tell a story and let others find out the meaning of something.?! I don't know if I am the only one that really have a problem or it is a new way of writing questions and answers!   If this contiues I'll consider getting of the list as these mails for me is just nothing. I have no time to get the email I need to adjust before I can read them. I would like to get other opinions about this so we could try to change it before it gets too many of these - to me - nonsence. 3. I can't completely answer your question, but I do know that male choruses were very popular in Norway in the 19th c. My g grandfather was in one in Sandefjord, Vestfold in the 1880s. I presume they sang both secular and sacred music, as one story members of the family know goes that at least some of them sang from the church steeple on Easter morning. I've seen pictures online of this church, which still exists. It has "shutters" on 3 sides of the steeple, which clearly would open outwards, so that the singers could stand inside and sing, their voices projecting outwards. No doubt they could be heard for a good distance, as they were well above the church doors. Google "Sandar church" for info on this church, including pictures that show the shutters, though they are closed. This group was famous enough that somehow Queen Victoria heard of them and invited them to come sing in her court. She asked them to wear their native costumes. But they also wore top hats--my g grandfather's is now in my brother's possession. There was a bit of a fuss because they were used to singing in knee breeches, and court dress required long pants. But they worked that out, and the chorus sang in their knee breeches, which were part of the native costume she'd asked them to wear. While a few may have known how to read music, mostly they sang by ear. But the music they were to sing for Queen Victoria was transcribed somehow into a book for them to learn their songs from and to take to England. He brought that to America with him, but it's now lost. I have no idea whether this chorus of singers was paid or not for their performances. My g grandfather was a merchant, and shows up that way in the local 1885 Sandefjord census. He emigrated to America not long after. Presumably this work as a singer was prestigious, or the chorus wouldn't have become known to the queen, and they wouldn't have been invited to sing for her. Nor would the top hat have been among the few things he chose to take with him to America. 3. Dear Wanda, You are touching a rather "complex" question, but let me try to give you at least a partial explanation! Each County (kommune - previously prestegjeld) has their own number series on the main farm units located in said County. The current system dates from 1886 and gives a series of numbers to the "main" farm units (in Norwegian: Gardsnummer), with a subnumber (in Norwegian: Bruksnummer) for each sub farm unit. When Counties merged, which has happened several times, in particular back on the 1960's, the farm numbers were changed adding the number series from one merging County onto the number series of the other merging County. For example: Luster County had 92 farm numbers, but merged 1964 with Hafslo County with 93 farm numbers and Jostedal County with 26 farm numbers. After the merger thw "new" Luster County has 211 farm numbers, the Luster part 1-92, the Hafslo part 93-185 and the Jostedal part 186-211. The number series from 1886 replaced a similar "old" farm number system dating from 1838. I hope this helps! Very sincerely yours, Lars E. It is not something I have dealt with before and I am confused as to the importance of them - I am guessing to possibly find census records when a transcription is not available?
